Elodie is prepared for her summer spent working as a counsellor at a summer camp to be the "worst summer ever", but she quickly gets the hang of dealing with the group of rambunctious little redheads in her charge. She even makes a friend in Catherine, a fellow counsellor, who is not as much of a goody goody as she first appears. But something strange is going on at camp and Elodie can't sleep until she finds out the truth.

Camp Spirit is a graphic novel for teens and adults by Canadian writer and artist Axelle Lenoir. It's set in Canada in the '90s, and I was expecting the time period to be a bit more important to the story, but it's only noticeable in the some of the characters' clothes and tastes in music. What I was not expecting was the supernatural elements, which become more of an issue as the story goes on.

I liked the playful style of the art, and Elodie's potty-mouthed little red-haired charges are hilarious, as was the bonkers Camp Chief. However, I found that the story dragged on a little, and was a bit hard to follow towards the middle of the book.

I have tagged this book "gay and lesbian" because- well that would be a spoiler. There is some homophobia involved, as well as lesbians being seen as something for straight men to drool over, but it is challenged within the story.

Camp Spirit is a fun, fairly short, graphic novel, that is a little bit Daria mixed with a dash of Lumberjanes. If you like this one, you might enjoy Haphaven by Norm Harper.

Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Top Shelf Productions, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
