I'm a freelance writer living in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. I'm a lover of theatre, soccer and making the most of life.
Because he really is funny
Get me to the Greek, The Greek Centre, Zeus in Lonsdale Street that is because I'm all Chilled Out and Fired Up. From the first glimpse across the road, The Greek was a hive of activity which I knew instinctively would be a good omen.
I love comedy. Love watching a great comedian and think that I'm probably a comedy snob. My experience with standup comedians in the past has involved large venues like the Atheneum or Comedy Club with a room full of loud hecklers whose only reason for being there is to upset the performer themselves.
Walking into the room, there were around 40 chairs and a small stage that had been converted from an office in the daytime to Cameron's domain for the next hour. Probably the shortest hour of my life I might add. I'm usually keen for an intermission or break within the first 30 minutes but not this time. I may not have ever heard of him but he is funny. Really funny. From the moment he walked onto the stage he had all the audience in stitches.
What I really loved about Cameron is that he didn't stand on the stage and tell jokes He interacted with his audience relating incidents about his life and taking situations from their answers and proceeded to make them funny. What would a comedy act be without it' token heckler? All in a day's work for Cameron who had him covered with witty comebacks. From stories about pandas and dogs to meat raffles and heart surgeons, there were very few quiet moments in the room and on the odd occasion the room was a little quieter, he fired everyone up making jokes about the silence.
As a great finishing touch, he shook hands and personally thanked everyone for coming which made everything even more humbling. If you're only able to see one show during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, then make it Cameron James. Get your Greek on and get chilled out and fired up- you won't regret it!
