Now this is an experience with a twist, or is that a 'hump'? And definitely one to pique my curiosity.
As most locals would know, we have the 'humps' that make up the Glasshouse Mountains, but did you know that we have another set of 'humps'? Yes, we sure do - the 'humps' at QCamel come in at a very quirky second.
QCamel is the first camel dairy farm on the Sunshine Coast, receiving its accreditations as a producer in 2014 and produced the first pasteurised camel milk in Australia. QCamel works closely with Maleny Cheese who produce Australia's only camel milk curd and cheese.
Camels are considered one of the most evolved land mammals on Earth. They have been milked for thousands of years and provided the most nutritious whole food source for communities in some of the most arid land in the world. Milking camels is not an easy process as camels are highly intelligent and sensitive creatures, who live in matriarchal herds. It takes time and patience to gain a camels' trust before they will permit you to milk them. Camel milk has ten times the amount of iron than cows' milk, three times more Vitamin C, it naturally contains insulin and is suitable for diabetics.
Live It Tours are offering a behind-the-scenes experience of the QCamel farm - Camels and Canapés to take place on Saturday, 27 August 2016 from 2.00pm, and on Saturday, 24 September 2016.
The three-hour Tour costs $110 per person (including return transfers from the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Centre) and sounds like an absolutely fun outing where guests will learn about the milking, production and benefits of camel milk and also be treated to a 'meet and greet' with resident camels. Guests will enjoy delicious canapés made from fresh camels' milk, which might include camels' milk panna cotta with fresh pomegranate, camels' milk tzatziki with zaatar bread and camels' gelato with batheetha as part of the Tour.
Together with a glass of bubbly and the magnificent views of the Glasshouse Mountains, this is sure to be a memorable experience, combining a potential 'super-food' with an encounter with these extremely gentle, highly intelligent animals.
