As part of the 2017 Anywhere Festival , Ben's Burgers and DJ Juan Vesuvius presents Calypso Nights . This theatrical performance involves comedy, social commentary and of course, calypso music. It ends with an all-in Latin dance party.



Venezuelan DJ Juan Vesuvius is the comedy creation of New Zealand's Barnie Duncan. His absurd take on what a Latin DJ would be like is designed to break down your guard and give the audience the opportunity to learn about a type of music that they know little or nothing about, calypso.

His performance has won awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. While on the surface his performance might appear to be mostly silly, this is comedy with depth and a great sense of absurdist fun.

The venue for this event is Ben's Burgers in West End which has built a reputation for their great burgers. Nothing fancy here and the menu only has 4 burgers on it, but people come back time and again. Along with burgers, they also have a unique cocktails menu. For a calypso night, I would be thinking of ordering the Tropical Rum Slushie.



Why is there a comedy calypso performance at Ben's Burgers? Well, it is all part of the Anywhere Festival which takes the theme that theatre can be held anywhere. In fact, this year they have banned performances in theatres. Ben's Burgers will also be hosting some other performances during the festival.

Ben's Burgers is the perfect place for such a performance with a great reputation for a fun atmosphere, especially on a Friday and Saturday night. So book your tickets, grab your maracas and ideally put on a loose fitting silk shirt and get your calypso on.

Oh, I should write something about calypso for people who don't know much about this music. If you are thinking you don't know any calypso songs you are wrong because you would have heard of the Harry Belafonte's Banana Boat Song (Daylight come and me wanna go home). It is a really fun musical style that came out of the Caribbean at the start of the 20th century.
