A fascinating and environmentally-friendly event is happening nationwide with the latest Caloundra instalment - the
event. This is to be held on Saturday, 26 June 2021, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm AEST,
Clarke Place Park , 10/7 The Esplanade, Caloundra, QLD 4551. For FREE tickets/registration, see
eventbrite.com.au . Also run by
Visionary Ocean Warriors . supported by the
Sunshine Coast Council . An example of the sort of stuff that gets cleaned up is shown in the picture below:
According to
www.seasidescavenge.org , this is an event that makes recycling fun - with a clear structure and interesting approach to cleaning up seaside beaches and waterways.
This event is great for the environment, helping attendees connect with their community, clean up local environments, win great prizes and groove along to some live tunes. This will be part of the
United Nations' World Environment Day Festival month-long celebration for 2021.
For those who haven't been to a scavenge, this is a progressive concept helping and rewarding work with quality donated items (pre-loved clothes, books, toys and more) as a reward for doing a few hours of work on cleaning up the local environment. It achieves quite a lot - such as boosting awareness of the environment, cleaning waterways and stopping pre-loved items appearing in already strained landfill resources. Seaside Scavenge focuses on coastal locations and with the help of Visionary Ocean Warriors (a local (Beerwah-based) environmental group that organises similar clean-up days) and the local council will help you clean up and get rewarded.
The key concept is
tokens - the more sorted, approved and catalogued litter you collect, the more tokens you get to exchange for quality donated items as a reward for the effort needed to clean up the environment, hence promoting good work for their aim of environmental cleanliness and recovery from littering. Finally, in terms of the event itself, this is a
family-friendly event, due to the times and nature of the event, so just to clarify, family participation is definitely catered for - with toys being part of the items exchangeable for tokens.
For
Covid safe participation please see the following:
Bring your own bags, gloves and masks if wanting to participate in the cleaning-up part of the event. Don't attend if you are feeling unwell. Please download the
COVIDSafe app before attending. Hand sanitiser will be provided on site. Social distancing of 1.5 metres is monitored amongst the groups. Any changes to the day's plans are based on constant monitoring of new government info as it unfolds. For more details on how the organisers will be ensuring the event is COVID-19 safe,

Transport to Event
Contrary to the link on the
Eventbrite pages, the event is going ahead, with correct
Facebook pages linked on this page once released. I've left some facts about travelling there from Brisbane
by train , and there is indeed a possibility of travelling there by train, but it would involve leaving Brisbane city or nearby stations at 7am arriving near the Clark Place Park around 9 am - according to
Translink , and that would likely affect some participation.
It should be added while there is a 6.30 am bus from Landsborough station to Caloundra on the Saturday, there is no train from Brisbane that connects to it, so the only way to get there by train is from Brisbane around 7am (depends on the exact stop, e.g. it leaves Toowong at 6.55 am) and then a 8.33 am connecting bus at Landsborough getting to Caloundra at 9.03 am. Even so, it's still a fun event to just 'admire from a distance' - or part of a
Caloundra stay or day trip. Staying from Friday night onwards is a great alternative to a day trip - especially as Caloundra is so ideally located in terms of proximity to Brisbane and Noosa.
