Callum Straford's show
Oops! Live is currently playing as part of
MICF 2022 . Callum is a young, dynamic entertainer, determined not to be limited by the almost impossibly small stage space available to him. The space is further limited by the fact that he shares the stage with a keyboard, a banjo and a few props. Yet somehow, he managed to fit in a rendition of a crime scene investigation, ride a scooter and do a TV studio 'live cross' during his show.
Oops! is a reflection of the things that go wrong in one's life. The things you shouldn't say to a prospective lover. How things may have gone differently if only you had said or done something different.
The stories are told in song and sketch form. Callum is a very capable musician, starting with 'the best introduction ever' accompanied by the banjo. The perhaps inevitable reference to ScoMo's banjo playing episode comes into play; happily there is no comparison in terms of their respective musical abilities.
Later in the show, Callum takes to the keyboard and proves his prowess there, too.
Perhaps my favourite acts in the show were Callum's song about AirPods that had been dropped into the Yarra River - told from the perspective of the AirPods, an ode to the use of sunscreen, and a sketch about The Beatles, in which Callum takes on the role of each of The Beatles. These were original and witty.
There was also the humorous appearance of the 'tech guy' on stage at one point, providing a clever interlude from the solo act format.
Overall, I felt the musical comedy was stronger and more consistent than the sketch elements, but there were flashes of brilliance throughout. I do enjoy Callum's bold, energetic, take-no-prisoners style of comedy. He displays a wealth of skills and talent that I feel sure will continue to evolve as his comedic career develops.
