Calligraphy is the art of making lovely symbols by hand and arranging them well. It is actually a set of skills and techniques where you learn to position and inscribe words/symbols, so they turn out harmonious with a creative flair.

It is an art that is still practised today by many people and is a hobby to many people who produce it using just paper, a pen and having an understanding about the surface of the paper.

Officially calligraphers would have defined calligraphy as "writing that is both fine and legible". However, now contemporary calligraphers are challenging this definition and producing innovative and different graceful interpretations of calligraphy.

Western calligraphy is mainly using the alphabet derived from classical Roman Latin letter shapes. Over time, this has been adapted by calligraphers into many different scripts. Calligraphers now use a whole range of materials. Actually, calligraphers seem to find a way to write on just about anything that makes a mark as writing is basically mark-making. The basic tools for writing are penholders and nibs. They use broad nibs, as these have a wider writing edge. They also use a pointed nib, as this can make different styles simply by applying pressure to the nib.

The Kalli-grams Exhibition showcases a range of calligraphic styles which are framed small images plus an assortment of similarly related crafts and techniques produced by calligraphers and exhibited in display cases.

This exhibition will be on from Wednesday 20th February until Thursday 14th March 2019 and open during library hours. The venue will be the Gallery at Library at The Dock, 107 Victoria Harbour Promenade, Docklands.

The Calligraphy Society of Victoria was founded to promote this hobby and to share their interest in this amazing art. The Calligraphy Society of Victoria is a non-profit organisation who are calligraphers, lettering artists and people who just love to do this form of lettering.

The society has a meeting once a month in a central location in Melbourne. They also conduct regular workshops in calligraphy and similar arts, as well as organise exhibitions, and generally support and promotes calligraphy and outstanding lettering.

The society also produces an informative journal called Postscript, which goes out to the members six times a year. They have a wide range of books in their library, as well as journals and original artwork.

They also put on a summer school and this is a yearly event which attracts international tutors and visitors from all around Australia and New Zealand.
