Moving from their previous location in Bangkok, Thailand,
Call Me Curry & Izakaya is a family-founded restaurant that offers Japanese curry and various other Japanese dishes. It is popular, there was a large crowd present when we visited for dinner on a weekday.
The main draw of the restaurant is its Japanese Curry, which is crafted from a 24-hour slow-cooked beef broth. The curry gravy had a slightly thick consistency and a level of spiciness that is suitable for most tastes. It had the background sweet taste typical for Japanese curries. For vegetarians, there is an option that is made from vegetable broth.
For the topping, diners can choose either a single ingredient or a combo of up to three choices. We chose a combination of Lava Egg and Australian Beef Hamburg. The style of the Lava Egg served here was a light and fluffy omelette with a moist interior. The Australian Beef Hamburg was not dry and had a delectable charred flavour. Served with the dish were rice, shredded cabbage, pickles and a salad dressed with a sesame dressing.

It may not look like it at first but the portion size of their Donburi (Rice Bowl) dishes was quite generous. The egg was soft while still retaining some texture and the sauce had a delightful sweet-savoury flavour. We chose the Pork Katsu option, which had succulent flesh set off nicely by the crumb coating. Completing the dish was a serving of shredded cabbage.

One of the dishes from the Small Dishes selection, their Karaage Chicken had flesh that was juicy, which was contrasted by a crisp coating. It was cooked sufficiently to give it a golden-brown colour. Along with shredded cabbage, Japanese mayonnaise and mustard came with the dish to serve as a dipping sauce.

The décor of the restaurant gave it an Asian feel. The location is very accessible for university students, office workers and Rundle Mall shoppers. Booking ahead is advised to ensure you don’t have to wait for a table.
