I'll Have a Double Sugar Fix Thanks
Here is a friendly word of warning if you visit Calatrava. Do not think of the numerous effects of too much sugar on your body and mind. Forget that too much sugar increases your risk of diabetes. Store in an irretrievable part of your brain the fact that sugar can cause health problems to your organs like your kidneys, liver and heart. Do not give another thought to the fact that these are called your 'vital organs' for a reason.
"After I finish this one I could try…."
Too much sugar can also increase your chances of depression and acne. High blood sugar can increase your risk of yeast infection and dentists swear that sugar should be your archenemy.
But, on balance, a sugar fix from gelati, ice cream and those unbelievably delicious cakes has to be worth it! My biggest problem was deciding on which flavoured ice cream to try and which cake to take home for later.
A double batch of rainbow ready!
I am wondering if this is the biggest selection of gelati and ice cream in Melbourne. As you would expect they have many fruit flavours including mango, pineapple, strawberry, boysenberry, lemon, passion fruit, lime, blood orange, raspberry and mixed berries.
They also have an impressive chocolate range, the ever-popular rainbow (9/10 kid's pick), and some other very tempting flavours such as Cherry Ripe, white chocolate, honeycomb crunch, Tiramisu, cookies and cream, hazelnut, mascarpone and fig, Ferraro, and a first for me, Tim Tams.
I should have stuck with my first love… chocolate
My inclination was to pick a chocolate, but for some reason I swayed at the last minute and chose boysenberry ripple. The grass is always greener on the other side and so my daughter's cookies and cream tasted 1000 times better at the time. Unfortunately she agreed, so my powers of persuasion were lost on her when I tried to get her to do a swap halfway through.
I am not resentful however I did point out that we could have bought three large tubs of ice cream for the price of the three cones. The baby cones cost $3.90, a one flavour cone $4.90, two flavours for $6.90 or a 500g take home pack for $13.90. These prices didn't seem to perturb the mini crowds that lined up to make a purchase.
I thought it was stressful enough trying to pick one flavour. I can't imagine what it'd be like for the staff trying to attend to customers like us who changed our minds so many times and asked so many questions. In my defence I seriously wanted to know why some of the gelati was in the wrong section.
A queue and a crowd in winter!
To counter the effect of all this sugar I walked inside and then up and down several times in front of the class cabinets of cakes.
This super tempting shop for sweet tooths is unavoidable (as if you'd want to). If you go to the Melbourne Convention Centre, Crown or walk along the Yarra in Southbank you can't miss it. Start saving now because you will want to take home at least one cake portion.
True to Calatrava style, the range is massive and includes sweeties like various flavoured cheesecakes, macaroons, tarts, mousse cakes and meringues. Despite the price of the nearly eight dollars per portion, I was not deterred, they had me on heavenly chocolate!
