I'm a postgraduate student living in the inner west cities of Sydney, with a passion for food, music and travel.

Cupcakes are just muffins that went to fashion school

"Cupcakes are just muffins that went to fashion school".

A quote I managed to stumble on from browsing too many cake baking or decorating websites. However it is also a quote that I absolutely agree on, especially after taking cupcake decorating classes at Planet Cake.

Cupcakes taste great with or without the decorations, it adds that tiny bit of excitement and fun.

When I attended the class, I had that quote in mind. I love makeovers so I decided to makeover my uneven, awkward shaped cupcake. The cupcake class definitely made the makeover an enjoyable overall experience.

Planet Cake is renowned for their experience in novelty cakes, designer cakes and wedding cakes. It is also the home to the largest cake decorating school in the Southern Hemisphere. They have published a number of decorating books that might be familiar to cake lovers.

Dressing up my cupcake could not of been any easier when the class was taught by using common utensils we might already own. Rulers, knives, pizza cutters and paintbrushes are tools we can easily buy at any store without having to buy it at professional cake decorating stores. For beginners, we don't want to invest all that money and time to find these tools when we might be doing it on rare occasions.

The cupcakes were pre-made but weren't made to perfection. They took into account that highly likely our cupcakes may bake with dents, or a muffin top with sharp edges. As a result, they taught us how to fix the problem rather than provide us with perfectly flat cakes that would make life way too perfect.

The class was to go on for roughly 3 hours, but it went for shorter because our class was so productive. Classes usually run for 3 hours for cupcakes but can be shorter or longer depending on your pace.

Six cupcakes and six different designs with all ingredients and tools provided. Classes are a maximum of 12 people with one teaching staff, but they walk around to assist you and the way the room is set-up, you can easily see the teacher.

Besides cupcake decorating classes, they also offer a range of cake covering classes like for round cakes and for novelty designs.

Most classes are offered on weekends and is located in the residential areas of Balmain. There is no car parking space, only street parking, so best to park down the road and walk up or get dropped off.

Pricing of the classes varies with the type of classes but you receive a 10% early discount offer when you book a while in advance. As a returning student, your also guaranteed a 5% discount with or without the early bird discount offer.

Next time you plan a weekend with friends, or just want to do something different, this might be the place to enjoy a day of creativity.

If you live more towards the inner west, you might consider trying out the cake decorating solutions class, which I've also attended and enjoyed greatly.

Using a pizza cutter to decorate a cake? That's novel. I like that they teach you without the need for piping equipment.
