I can remember my brother playing with LEGO when we were kids and remember seeing the intent on his face as he constructed many things. However, that was around forty years ago and nothing compares to what you could purchase back then to what you can purchase today. Children all over the world are still getting as much enjoyment out of the
toy as they did when it was first manufactured over seventy years ago.
A Danish gent by the name of
Ole Kirk Kristiansen founded the LEGO Group in 1932 and the company is still in the same family today, now being owned and run by
Kjeld Kirt Kristiansen , the grandson of Ole.
LEGO comes from an abbreviation of two Danish words "leg godt" meaning "play well", which is an apt name for the toy.
The Company's LEGO® Brick has also been named "Toy of the Century" twice and is the foundation of the LEGO® products. The original brick was launched in 1958. On Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June Cairns will be hosting "
The " where creative brick builders will be showcasing their talents in exhibits built entirely from
LEGO®.
There will be a number of different themes on display such as Space and Star Wars, Ships, Robotics, Dinosaurs, Technic vehicles, City (with working trains) plus much much more. The weekend is set to be the biggest event of its kind to be held in Cairns. There will also be build and play tables for adults and children of all ages to try their hands at a creation of their own.
The venue for the event is the
Fred Moule Exhibition Centre at the Cairns Showgrounds on the corner of Severin Street and Mulgrave Road. Cost of entry is $13.00 adults, $7.00 for Children 3-15 years, Family (Two Adults and three or four children) is $43.00. Children aged under three years are free. Tickets can be
pre-purchased or bought at the door. Hours on both days is from 9.00am to 4.00pm.
Merchandise including games, jewellery creations and all the latest LEGO® products will be on sale at the various retail stalls within the complex on the weekend.
If you cannot make it to the Cairns event, similar events are being held in
Rockhampton in July and the
Gold Coast in September, 2016. More information about the Cairns event and amazing photographs of creations from previous events can be found on their
website .
