Do your lunch box memories include squashed cheese and Vegemite sandwiches, perhaps peanut butter and jam, or my personal favourite, soggy tomato?
Thankfully the humble lunch box has grown up and had a luxurious makeover that only the likes of acclaimed chef Shannon Bennett, of Cafe Vue/Bistro Vue/Vue de Monde fame, could provide.

At $18.00 it's not an everyday lunch, but considering the cost involved at dining in at some of Chef Bennett's other establishments, this affordable option at Cafe Vue is perfect for when you feel like a little treat. The price is the same regardless of whether you prefer to take away or dine in where it is served on a chopping board. (Have you noticed all the cool kids don't use plates anymore?)
Comprising of a starter, a salad, savoury main and dessert you will not be left hungry. They are themed depending on the time of year, be it Irish for St Patrick's Day, or last month's Easter theme.
This month you can feast on their 'Late Autumn Harvest' creation. You will start with basil and macadamia pesto on Turkish bread, followed by a salad of pearl barley, mushroom, walnut, carrot with balsamic dressing then a smoked beef brisket, caramelised onion and bacon brioche. Beautifully finished with a salted caramel, almond and orange tart for dessert.
Cafe Vue Lunch Box for month of May
And to all the vegetarians and gluten free folk, fear not, there are modified (but equally delicious) versions of the regular lunch box especially for you.
Previous menus have included beautiful bread salads, a make your own bruschetta kit, tangy Asian noodles, quail scotch eggs, a pasta bake, bagels or focaccias filled mouthwatering pulled pork or lamb shoulder. And of course desserts – cherry pies, custard tarts and passionfruit puddings just to name a few.
I am a regular visitor to Cafe Vue at 430 Little Collins Street however the lunch box is also available at 401 St Kilda Road, Cafe Vue at Heide and 2 locations at Melbourne International Airport – yes you can take your lunch box on the plane. Just imagine how envious your fellow passengers will be when you open up your 5 star lunch just as they peel back the foil on their in-flight reheated mush. This will definitely be one lunch you won't want to trade.
