I could go with Café Vita et flores (Latin for 'Life and flowers') is at the dead centre of Springvale and everyone is dying to get there, and I wouldn't be wrong. It really is located at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery and the café amidst the beautiful garden settings is like a shining light that beckons you to come in for some sustenance of not just your soul but your physical being as well.

The café is light and airy and very spacious and located at 600 Princes Highway (Dandenong Road), Springvale, with an additional entrance to the cemetery on Police Road. It has seating indoors and out, where you can admire the surrounds of the tranquil gardens. It's definitely a nice place to stop after a long walk around the cemetery (purely for pleasure and exercise) for a hot cuppa and something to eat.

Open between 8.30am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends, the café also offers free Wi-Fi and the ability to queue music to a digital jukebox.

When I was there in March, they were excitedly expecting their first wedding on the 28th . I take note that I also read in the Women's Weekly about another wedding that took place in a cemetery. Perhaps it's trending and why not. It is after all a place where we've left our families for safe keeping and what better way to include them. According to the Leader community newspaper, 'Cemetery weddings revives a common Victorian era practice of socialising among the gravestones on Sundays'.

The café has a Facebook page you can like and they even rate on Urbanspoon . You'll find pictures of the recent wedding on their page.

Breakfast options include yoghurt with honey and fruit ($6.50), toast with fruit jam and butter ($3.50) and other varieties like sweet French toast with berry compote and warm chocolate, savoury French toast with bacon and grilled tomato, eggs any style on toast with chutney, the big breakfast, baked beans on toast with bacon, omelette and so on and range from $10.50 to $18.50 (big breakfast).

For lunch you can check the board for Chef's specials and you can get the general sandwiches and panini's in the $7 to $8 dollar price range. Children's meals come in at $12 for mini burgers and chips, fish fingers and chips, popcorn chicken or chicken goujon and chips and all kids meals include a 375ml can of Schweppes and a scoop of ice cream. You can also order the usual teas and coffees, milkshakes, hot chocolates and wines.

The café is not just an extension of the florist and gift shop, its name is influenced by from next door and it also has 7 function rooms which you can hire and organise a customised menu via the onsite catering facilities as well. The Function Team would be more than happy to speak to you. Call them on (03) 9546 9691, or email [email protected]. You can also complete a form on their website .
