One of the hottest new places in Adelaide right now is Troppo Cafe. With its funky exterior, it's no surprise to learn that the owners are the same people from local company Troppo Architects. In fact, the external facade is made entirely from recycled materials, giving a stripped back, understated vibe with exposed support beams, brightly coloured pot-plants and wooden everything.

Having been lured inside by the gorgeous exterior, the inside is a cosy nest along the same line - lots of recycled timber, pots of herbs everywhere, and fresh produce arranged neatly around the exposed kitchen. Troppo looks absolutely fantastic, and fortunately enough, the food, coffee and great service backs up their extensive design efforts.

First things first, Troppo is small. So don't be discouraged if you happen to visit on a weekend day and miss out on getting a table. It's well worth a visit even if just for a coffee, and when the weather is nice, there's nowhere nicer than to sit outside in the sun overlooking Whitmore Square. You can always grab a take-away coffee or freshly-squeezed juice and sit in the square on a sunny day.

The coffee is second-to-none, with the kind of baristas you're likely to see at some other popular Adelaide cafes. Plus the coffee is organic and fair-trade, making it even more satisfying. Troppo does a short and sweet breakfast and lunch menu. There are only a few choices but it changes daily, depending on what's in season or what the chef is experimenting with that day.

Breakfast is always based around your usual choices, like eggs with a variety of accompaniments, or house-made muesli, gourmet pastries and the like. Simple, hearty and presented beautifully. It's exciting walking in and not knowing exactly what will be on the menu, but you're unlikely to be disappointed with the the gorgeous array of dishes they rustle up.

Sweet-tooth types are covered with a selection of home-made sweets, and lots of gluten-free options too. Hot tip? The cinnamon buns are so fresh and sugary enough to give you immediate holes in your teeth (in a good way).

But isn't just your average day-time cafe, they're helping to build a revolution of great stuff in our city, with participation in the newly-formed Cafe Series. Just imagine.. live and completely unplugged artists performing for you in an intimate setting, surrounded by good company, delicious food and fine wine. If this sounds like your cup of tea, check out the event page for the Cafe Series here .

For night-time endeavours they have a sure-fire selection of tapas dishes that are hearty and great for sharing. Add great wine to the mix and the ever-versatile Troppo presents a killer evening.

Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Or a coffee and croissant. Or a fresh orange-and-ginger juice (my favourite), Troppo is new, refreshing, and wonderful. The owners have created a little ecosystem of great eating and excellent staff, so kudos to them for creating a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
