Calling all good willed coffee lovers!

We all know that everyone has his or her favourite place to grab a mug, but for one day this year, (the 10th of August 2012) if you change your place of purchase, not only will you be getting your daily grind, but you will also be supporting a good cause, CafeSmart 2012 .

All around Australia, a group of participating cafes have rallied and will be donating $1 from each and every coffee sold on the 10th of August this year to homeless services. The event is organised by StreetSmart a support agency targeting homelessness. StreetSmart works hard to provide support for agencies and projects that work towards sustainable change for the homeless. They use 100% of profits raised from public events for their projects. To date, StreetSmart has raised an amazing $2,024,542! This money has been used for 491 'grassroots' projects. You can follow StreetSmart on Facebook and see what else they are up to throughout the year.

"But what will one dollar from my coffee do to help the homeless?" You may ask.

In 2011, 175 Cafes took part in CafeSmart and across Australia, $47,477 was raised in one day! This money was used for 38 local projects throughout Australia. And you thought one coffee couldn't make a difference. Feeling compelled by generosity? You can make an extra donation online if the spirit moves you.

The current list of participating cafes around Australia is available onhttp://www.streetsmartaustralia.org/findcafe so you can hunt down a café near you. And the list of supporting cafes just keeps growing as the days go by.

I myself can personally attest to the greatness of the coffee available at St Ali's and First Pour café, on Melbourne's list of supporting cafes. Both are places I have been drawn to more than once for their fantastic coffee.

With cafes such as these supporting the cause, you can't go wrong! In fact, you may even find yourself a new regular haunt, unless, of course, your local spot happens to already be one of these, in which case you should fill a car and take your friends with you! It's all for a good cause.

If you happen to be a café owner, why not sign up and support a good cause? Coffee roasting companies can make one of the greatest impacts by signing up, as that will affect all the cafes they source beans to. So join the cause and become part of the CafeSmart Roasters team.

Several coffee roasting greats have already donated beans to all of their client cafes for the event including:

Di Bella Coffee
St Ali/Sensory Lab
All Press
Single Origin Roasters
Five Senses
Veneziano
Campos
Gridlock
and Danes.

So this year on the 10th of August, where will you be getting your coffee and where will that extra $1 be going? Just remember: you should never underestimate the difference that can be made by small change.
