Bar Metzo - Hottest Coffee Bar None
Last month the usual landslide of Internet 'bargains' tumbled into my Junk mail and one in particular caught my eye. Lunch or breakfast, consisting of a substantial savoury snack and a jumbo coffee, for $5, normally $11.95. My husband and I were going to be in the Brisbane CBD for volunteer training. How easy and economical was that to cater for our luncheon needs.

At 293 Adelaide Street, Brisbane, Bar Metzo is not in the heaving heart of the CBD which is part of its charm. It is an intimate setting with simple aluminium furniture that is kept scrupulously clean, a big plus in the food industry. The daily newspapers are available for newshounds, and chatty owner, John Savvas, is an entertainment in himself.

Now to the food. There was a wonderful choice of both sweet and savoury treats, and my typically hungry hubby was well satisfied by his serving. The combination of fillings was delicious.

Sweets for the Sweet

The clincher to the deal was the coffee. It was HOT. How often has the barista fiddled with your cuppa for so long that it comes out as a work of art rather than a hot drink? I'm used to having my choice of coffee – half strength, decaf, skinny latte – denigrated as a "why bother?" John's terminology was "a Brisbane River" – quite appropriate with the amount of fresh currently colouring our treacherous icon. The brand on offer is Shibello caffee.

Bill of Fare

If you are looking for an early breakfast with a hot heart starter, Bar Metzo opens at 6 am. It also offers a catering service which includes its usual variety of sweets and savouries as well as fresh fruit platters.

Just to make sure the bill of fare was of the same standard at standard prices, I visited the café a week later and was not disappointed.
