MAMILs are a sign of good coffee are they not? For those of you who have not met a MAMIL, may I explain what one is - a middle aged man in lycra. In other words, a cyclist. Our current Prime Minister is a good example. Anyway there is an urban myth in Sydney that if there is a group of cyclists sitting around a cafe, than that cafe serves very decent coffee, because for some reason cyclists apparently know their coffee.
Last weekend we were in Beecroft early in the morning, hankering for our daily cup of joe. We saw a group of MAMILs sitting outside Cafe Long Shot sipping on their macchiatos, so we were in there like a flash. There is both indoor and outdoor seating at the cafe. Obviously MAMILs like to sit outside to keep an eye on their very expensive wheels. We decided on sitting indoors as we had our 2 young boys with us and we had visions of them knocking down all of those very expensive bikes, domino style, if we chose to sit outside.
Cafe Long Shot is one of those places where you order, pay and take a number from the front counter. We found a spot to sit and promptly ordered our coffee and breakfast as the cafe was filling up fast with young families - the only other people besides MAMILs who dine at the crack of dawn on a weekend (Cafe Long Shot opens at 7.00am).
Service was fast and efficient. Our coffees came in record time as did the blueberry muffins that we ordered for our kids to eat. Cafe Long Shot does a serious trade in muffins - look at how awesome the muffin top is! There were several different flavours to choose from and they are baked freshly on site each day. They actually have a dedicated kids menu, but the muffins just looked too good not to order.
Breakfast is served 7 days a week and ranges in price from about $5.00 - $20.00 depending on how fancy your order is. The bacon and egg roll was a generous size but it needed a bit more of the accompanying tomato relish to give it some oomph. The breakfast bruschetta of Brasserie Bread sourdough toast with a poached egg, a roast tomato, a slice of bacon and wilted rocket was tasty and the poached egg was cooked perfectly.
If you arrive at lunch time, Cafe Long Shot's menu includes sandwiches, salads and more substantial items such as burgers, risotto and fish. They cater for both vegetarian and gluten free diets, with the menu even telling you what meals are coeliac adaptable. Please note that lunch is only available Monday to Saturday. The front cabinet is full of sweet looking little morsels that would be a perfect accompaniment to your Morgan's coffee, so make sure you drop by for morning or afternoon tea too.
We polished off our breakfast quickly so that we could make way for other families that were lining up at the door. Clearly everyone in the 'hood knows how good the coffee is at Cafe Long Shot, either that or they come to admire all of those middle aged men in lycra!
