Café Lerida is perched halfway up a hill overlooking Lake George and part of Lerida Estate Winery. Only half an hour from the city, this Estate has a unique location where Pinot Noir is grown amongst other white and red varieties.
A stunning feature of Café Lerida is the stunning view of Lake George - a 25km long basin in the landscape believed to be a million years old. The lake can fill up at certain times, however when it is empty it is used by farmers to graze sheep and cattle. It is fascinating to imagine this huge plain full of water. Locals who I have spoken to remember when it was so full (decades ago) that it used to lap the Federal Highway next to it.
The vines and the green flat basin of Lake George.
As you walk along the pathway to the Café and Cellar Door, the view of the "lake" and the vines is just magnetic.
Café Lerida has inside seating with large windows to enjoy the view as well as outside tables. As we visited in the first few days of Spring we were more than happy to sit out in the full sun, however as the weather warms up there are large umbrellas to sit under and a courtyard in shade to enjoy your meal and view.
There are several tables inside, looking out through two large windows. In Winter there is a large fire to also enjoy.
For our visit we could choose from the Breakfast Menu (10am - 11:30am) or the Sweet Treats Menu (all day), both equally is delicious and surprisingly affordable, given the location. The Muffin of the Day on our visit was roasted banana, walnut and white chocolate and this was chosen by our daughter Miss Four.
Muffin of the Day ($5) with organic orange juice ($4.50)
The wonderful staff were welcoming and friendly, the views were stunning and the food was delicious. We couldn't take our eyes off the panoramic scenery before us as we quietly enjoyed our meals whilst also watching the swallows diving between the vines. It was a relaxing, scenic spot for an enjoyable breakfast.
Despite the early time, we couldn't come to this Winery without tasting some wines at the Cellar Door. See here for the Cellar Door Range to try.
Café Lerida is open on weekends only, with live bands each Sunday between 12:30 - 3pm to enjoy. The bands play in the Barrel Room next to the Café and each week different solo artists or bands come in to perform. For example in the next month there will be a classical guitarist, harpist, pianist playing Broadway musicals and a trio playing Jazz and Latin music. Bookings are recommended to ensure you get a table, details here.
If you are wanting to escape the city, or perhaps are on your way to/from Sydney for the weekend, stop in at the beautiful Café Lerida just off the Federal Highway.
It is Café which has it all - scenery, delicious food, live music, great prices and wine tasting.
