Starting out as a small outlet first opened in 1990, Cafe de Vili's soon grew into a cafe that is very popular with the locals. Part of the success is that it is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, allowing you to grab a meal at any time. They have recently opened a branch at Main North Road, Blair Athol, and it is already proven to be popular, with relatively large crowd when we visited.
One of their most famous products is their meat pie, which can be ordered as a combo with fries, salad or both, or as a pie floater, a popular dish in Adelaide in which the pie is served in pea soup. The 'Hot Chilli Beef Pie' we ordered consists of chunks of tender beef in chilli gravy that gave it a nice hit of chilli flavour. It's encased in golden brown crisp pastry that contrasted wonderfully with the filling. We ordered it as part of a combo with fries, salad and gravy. The salad was refreshing and the fries were crisp with fluffy interiors. The gravy served with the dish also complemented the pie and fries nicely.
Apart from their pies, Cafe De Vili's serves a wide range of pastries, Australian cuisine and a few Asian inspired dishes. The 'Vili's Burger with the Lot' had a juicy beef patty that was perfectly complemented by the lettuce, tomato, fried egg, bacon and beetroot. It came served with fries that were done as well as the one that was served with the Hot Chilli Beef Pie combo.
The serving of the 'Deluxe Breakfast' was generous enough that it can easily be shared with friends and the bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and sausage were cooked just right. It was accompanied with a few slices of toast and a serving of baked beans that helped to complete the dish.
For dessert, you can choose from their wide range of cakes. We found the Rigo Slice to be a bit dry for our taste but the Napoleon Slice was moist with layers of vanilla and chocolate cake perfectly complemented by the layers of buttercream. Some people may find the strawberry topping a bit too sweet.
