On the first level of a shopping plaza, facing Lake Jindabyne is where you will find the small Persian restaurant, Cafe Darya. The cafe only opens in the evening and I would highly recommend booking one of the seven tables in advance.

When we arrived for our 7pm booking, we were promptly seated, sanitised and checked in. We opened our bottle of red, the restaurant is BYO only, and selected our starters choosing the trio of dips and the kuku.

Whilst a trio of dips may sound like a standard starter, these were not your standard tasting dips. The three dips were made up of a curried eggplant, a fresh yoghurt, cucumber and mint, and my personal favourite a creamy spinach with a dash of sweet cinnamon.

Kuku is a Persian style egg frittata. It has a dense almost bread-like consistency and is less eggy in flavour than an Italian frittata. As I have never had this variation before, I cannot compare it but I enjoyed it nonetheless and would order again.

Up next, the mains, from which there are eight selections each coming with accompanying Persian style rice. Each of the dishes has a different meat and offerings include beef, camel, goat and of course chicken. There is only one vegetarian option and one pescatarian option, Meygou Khazar, a prawn dish which we ordered.

The warm terracotta dish came packed with eight prawns in a thick tomato and mushroom sauce which had a slight kick. I would have liked a few more slices of mushrooms but the abundance of prawns more than made up for any lack of mushies.

For our second dish we went for the Khoresht-E-Morgh, chicken pieces cooked with rhubarb, silverbeet and sultanas. There was a sweetness to the dish which was not dissimilar to turkey and cranberries - if this combo excites your taste buds, then I'd suggest giving the chicken a try.

Unlike many restaurants, after we had finished filling our bellies, we were not rushed out the door, instead the waitress made us feel very comfortable to stay to finish off our bottle of wine.

If you are planning a trip to Jindy, check out this café but don't forget to call beforehand to check availability.
