As a resident of Brunswick, there are just a few cuisines to choose from. There's Turkish kebabs, pubs, cafes and of course, pizza. For pizza, I like to steer clear of the fast food, Dominoes variety and more towards the authentic, fresh ingredients creations. After numerous disappointing and somewhat nauseating experiences we stumbled upon a little, unassuming cafe on Victoria St called Cafe Bellino.
Cafe Bellino is a quaint, licensed eatery that opens late night Thursday, Friday and Saturday (I think until 9pm), independently owned by a cute Italian couple. They are adorable, with the wife serving front of house, telling amusing stories about her parrot, and her husband quietly preparing the delicious food in the kitchen. They offer foccacia sandwiches, pasta, salads and soup in winter. However, the winning item on the menu is definitely the pizza.
Price-wise, they range from $12.50 to $14.50. Like I said before, I avoid the monster pizzas with horrible, processed toppings. Bellino's pizzas have thin, fresh crusts and not 2 inch deep with ingredients. They have simple toppings but quality not quantity. My favourite is the Ortolano which is vegetarian. Another favourite is the 4 Staggione, which is the four seasons pizza so each quarter has different toppings. The calzone is also amazing.
So, if you're in Brunswick and you're craving authentic, Italian style pizza, drop by Cafe Bellino (281 Victoria St, Brunswick), have a chat to the owner about her cockatoo, grab a coffee or wine, and enjoy a delicious slice of Italian's finest. Buon appetito!
