I'm a local girl who absolutely adores Adelaide. With the hills, ocean, and world's best wine regions, festivals all year round, great food and coffee, rich multiculturalism, and non-stop live music - why would I want to be anywhere else?

On a cold winter day, where better to be than a gorgeous café in the Adelaide Hills? Imagine sitting in a cosy little room, complete with a wood fire, great customer service, and food to die for. You will find all this and more at Café Assiette.

Set on the main street of the renowned and much-loved German village of Hahndorf, Café Assiette has multiple rooms and outdoor seating giving you the impression you're dining in seclusion, even when the place is roaring with business. If you're lucky enough to strike a quieter day you may even get one of these rooms to yourself.

The menu includes starters from $4.00, sandwiches and focaccias from $9.00, and mains from $10.50. The two-page special menu includes gluten free and vegetarian options and ranges from $11.90 to $26.90. A quaint selection of take home local honey and German mustards are also for sale.

I chose the Chicken Gorgonzola for $17.90 and had to pause after the first mouthful because the taste was simply delectable. Wood fired chicken medallions, white wine cream and blue vein sauce complete with a pear, rocket, and walnut salad topped with parmesan and red onion: heaven on a plate. Seriously, you will need a moment alone to savour this.

The staff are friendly and helpful, checking their customers are being looked after without hovering constantly. Meals are made and delivered quickly whilst not compromising on quality, taste, or presentation.

Café Assiette has got ambience down to a tee. The red and cream walls are dotted with a mix of local art and photography, rustic pieces, and wooden features. Three wood fires are your guarantee that Café Assiette will stay warm and cosy. Outdoor decking, street seating, and a sheltered courtyard means Café Assiette would also be a perfect place to dine during summer.

So, whether you're looking for a place to drink coffee, read the paper, and while the afternoon away or somewhere to catch up with friends over an affordable but unforgettable meal, head to Café Assiette – you won't be disappointed.
