I'm a quirky singer/songwriter living by the sea on the Gold Coast in Australia. Part crazy cat lady, part foodie, part Lady Gaga fanatic (she follows me on Twitter!), part world traveller. Oh, and I like writing too. Hi!
Okay, so I am going to come out and admit that I am a lame person who does not cook (I can't even boil an egg, and how the hell do you use a can opener!?) and who eats out at the same several dining establishments weekly (or more). Ahem. This is my Monday late lunch / early dinner cafe. I justify the delicious meals each week by walking here and back from Surfers Paradise, which is my exercise and thus, the food eaten "does not count". It is only a 10 minute walk over the Chevron Island bridge, but what the hey!
I took a while to actually try eating here, as for some reason I had it stuck in my silly head that it served mainly meat and "stodgy" food, neither of which I particularly love. Turns out I was so wrong and glad to be proven as such.
The service - it is flawless. The staff are all, every single one of them, gorgeous. They are sincere and genuinely friendly and chatty without being stalkerish or pushy. The drinks and meals are ordered and brought out promptly and with a smile. You are always checked on sometime later to make sure you are enjoying the food, which you most definitely are.
The food - oh my goodness me. The menu changes seasonally as the folks at Cafe Alfons like to mix it up, keep it fresh and they gather feedback from their customers to make sure they're on the ball with what people want when they want it. They also keep several faithful favourites around as well. My personal go-to options are the Alfons Eggs Benny, the rhubarb and honey roasted porridge (I cannot get enough of this right now. I am addicted!), the hot smoked salmon salad with pomegranates, berries and a poached egg, and the deluxe chicken toasty which is THE best toasted sandwich I have ever had. I am a toasty snob and usually don't like them, but this is something else. It is utter perfection, from the chicken to the filling down to the delicious bread.
The drinks are also deliciousness aplenty, with smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. There is a cake display at the counter that I won't mention much of here, as I have purchased too many of their amazing cakes, slices and muffins already and if I dwell on them now, I will start salivating and have to leave my comfy couch and go down there to buy more.
If you live on Chevron Island you may know several of the staff by name already, but if not, come on over and take a seat. It is the best cafe in Surfers Paradise and possibly the entire Gold Coast (now I feel guilty for saying that as I am a regular at so many...see how lame I am? I really am. But still, read my reviews. They're good. I hope.)
