Cafe 4342 in the town of Forest Hill in the Lockyer Valley is a great place to visit for breakfast, lunch, light meals, dinner, or coffee and cake. You can also buy some locally made products for sale in the cafe and explore the shops and history of the town.

About Forest Hill

Lockyer Valley is a rich fertile area just west of Brisbane and is dotted with little townships and other places of interest. Forest Hill is one such town worth popping into for shopping or food. What is interesting about Forest Hill is that it is a flat plain, not a hill. However, the locality of Plainland is hilly. The story goes that a local surveyor confused the names when making the map, forever creating the paradox of a flat hill and a hilly plain.

There is also a story behind the name of the cafe. As it is located in the former post office, they decided to name the cafe after the postcode of Forest Hill. Names aside, it is a great place for food with a nice section of local crafts to browse while you are there.

I have been there for breakfast, and like a lot of country cafes now, the food is of course very contemporary and beautifully presented. Enjoy a nice country omelette or for vegetarians, the spinach, macadamia & lemon balm omelette. You can go for something simpler like the truffle oil scrambled eggs or for those who love sweet things, a crepe or sweet French toast.

Don't forget the coffee, tea and great selection of cakes. There are also snacks such as dips or bruschetta.

For lunch or dinner, you can choose a light meal, such as a chicken salad (honey mustard or kiffer lime), a range of burgers, or pizzas. You can also have a more substantial meal, such as great pasta, which is a little boring compared with their beautifully presented mains, that include veal, chicken breast, fish or ribeye steaks.

Exploring the town

When visiting during the day, it is interesting to wander around the small township. There is a little bit of history, but fans of locally made arts and crafts will find several shops and galleries worth browsing, including Queen B's Collective.

Overall

Cafe 4342 is a lovely little cafe in a quaint little town serving contemporary style breakfast, lunch, light meals and full dinners. The cafe alone makes it worthwhile visiting the town when you are in the area. You can stop and shop during the day, visit some of the historic buildings or head to the pub afterwards for a few drinks in the evening.
