This was the motto painted on the wall of Cafe 41.
The small cafe is in the middle of the Watsonia shopping strip. When I was growing up it used to be a children's shoe shop where we got our Koala school shoes fitted every year.
Lots of specials
Cafe 41 is now a great place for generous helpings of cheap food that gets served fast. When we arrived at lunchtime on a Saturday there were no vacant seats inside or outside but we didn't have to wait long.
I'm sure this doesn't happen everyday, but today there were two elderly musicians in yellow suits playing cello and the piano accordion. This immediately appealed to me, as I like to go places that are just a little bit different.
Unexpected fun over lunch
I noticed that they had tradie's breakfast specials. For eight dollars tradies can have 2 eggs on a toasted roll with bacon and a large drink/coffee.
The focaccias were huge, probably enough for two people. The sandwiches were from $5.50, which is virtually unheard of in the cafes where we usually eat. They had a fairly large menu including other usual items for lunch such as tandoori chicken, schnitzels and enormous burgers. For vegetarians they had spuds, vegetarian lasagna, wedges, quiche, soup and wraps.
Hope you're hungry
I think they might have made a mistake because our bill for lunch for four, including drinks, was only $27. One of the kids had maple crÍpes with ice cream and cream for only five dollars. Two of us ate ricotta and spinach rolls that were different to the usual ones. I wasn't overly impressed but my friend thought it was really nice. They made an egg and bacon muffin although it wasn't on the menu.
Can't get much better value than this crepe
Cafe 41 is open five days a week from at 7AM and 8AM on Saturdays.
So, overall this rated very highly in my book. The meals could not have been better value, the service was friendly and we were in and out in less than one hour. No wonder they're so busy.
