I had read about the Caboose Canteen as a place with exotic beers and great food, I wasn't sure how it would be for breakfast but I was looking for somewhere quiet out of the main busy tourist drag areas so I headed for this "Canteen". I was catching up with an old friend and wanted a nice, quiet & cosy place without the pressure of being moved on.

There's not much really open in Melbourne around 7.30/8am on a Saturday morning, and sitting outside in an open air cafe didn't really have appeal on a cold winter's morning. We got there early to have breakfast and weren't disappointed the food was great.
Mushrooms on toast and with grated apple & sultanas, followed by a superb warm freshly baked muffin and coffee. We couldn't have been more content. The service was friendly and courteous and unrushed, and the view was engaging.
Perhaps if you're coming into the city to meet a friend for a catch-up you don't think of Melbourne City Square as a place to go, but I can highly recommend this little cafe at almost any time of the day for a quiet place to catch up with friends without the feel of pressing crowds.
