The Cabin Small Bar is an intimate little bar located upstairs on level 1 at 174 Scarborough Beach Road in Mount Hawthorn. It features indoor and outdoor seating, a fully stocked bar, vegetarian and gluten-free options, and a spot where local musicians can perform. Walking into the Cabin feels like walking into a hunting lodge somewhere in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. There are picture frames and animal figurines hanging off the walls and the whole place just feels warm and inviting. The Cabin Small Bar is closed on Mondays and open 4pm to late on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 12pm to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and from 12pm to 10pm on Sundays. It is closed on Public Holidays. The Cabin has special events that happen every night of the week like Happy Hour from 5pm to 6pm on weeknights and food and drink specials like 'Taco Tuesday' and 'Kids Eat Free' on Thursdays and 'Friday Cabin Cocktails' for $12 all day.

On Sunday nights, they host Acoustic Sessions where local musicians and bands perform a mix of original and cover tunes from 3pm-4pm to 7pm. Times vary per week. They also have a Sunday night food special which is a share platter big enough to feed one adult and one child that they call the Cabin Share Platter. It costs $49 and features a chef's selection of dishes that changes every week.

Grab a table on the balcony and sit back and relax" thumb="http://www.weekendnotes.com/im/004/03/the-cabin-small-bar-mount-hawthorn32.jpeg"]

On Sunday, March 24, 2019, we went to the Cabin to experience the Sunday Acoustic Session and to try their Cabin Share Platter. When we arrived we were met by an enthusiastic young waitress at the door who quickly showed us to a table. I was really impressed with how child-friendly the Cabin was. Within moments of sitting us down at our table, our waitress left and then came back with a cup full of pencils and a clipboard of activity sheets for our four-year-old. I also noticed that there were a large number of families with small children present enjoying the atmosphere both inside and out on the balcony.

A band called The Benchmarks was performing at the Cabin the night we came. They were seated out on the balcony. We were seated inside but could see them and hear them well. There were 2 people playing acoustic guitars, 1 person playing an acoustic bass guitar and 1 person playing the drum. They played a mixture of rock and alternative songs. Some of the songs they played included 'Creep' by Radiohead, 'Island in the Sun' by Weezer, 'Where is My Mind' by the Pixies and 'Throw Your Arms Around Me' by Hunters and Collectors. The Benchmarks were very popular with the people there on the night, especially little kids. There were little ones jumping up and down and dancing and having a great time.

We ordered the House Dips and Toasts to start with and got this charming bowl of thin slices of toast" border="1" width="662" title="The Cabin Small Bar Mount Hawthorn" margin="5" link="http://www.weekendnotes.com/im/004/03/the-cabin-small-bar-mount-hawthorn91.jpg" align="CENTER"]

We started our night with some house dips and toast for $6. We had a choice of three different kinds of dips: romesco, baba ghanoush or saffron hummus. We chose the saffron hummus. I was really impressed with the plating of the dish when it was brought to our table. The toast and the dips were presented to us on a breadboard. The toast was in a little bowl and the saffron hummus came in a little glass jar that had a piece of string tied around it. The toast was thinly sliced and had a really nice crunch to it and the saffron hummus had a strong, curry taste that reminded us of samosas. I really liked it.

For a drink, I got a Strawberry Pimms cocktail off the drinks menu for $16. It came in a tall glass and had a fresh minty taste with a hint of strawberry. It was very refreshing and had a strong summer vibe. If you like the sound of it you can get a pitcher of Strawberry Pimms for $43 to share among friends.

My four-year-old's favourite thing in the world is chips with tomato sauce so it wasn't a difficult choice for her to select fish bites, chips and tomato sauce off the children's menu for $9. Her dish came with a generous serving of fish and chips and some tomato sauce. She told me her dish was delicious!

For our main, we got the Sunday night special the Cabin Share Platter for $49. On the night we were there the Cabin Share Platter featured southern spiced baked chicken wings with ranch sauce and slaw, spicy potatoes with confit garlic aioli and parsley and lemon, leek and gruyere arancini with aioli, lamb provencale, crispy pork belly in plum sauce and cabin side salad. There was a lot to like about this dish. The pork belly was my favourite. It had a nice crispy skin and was coated in a sweet plum sauce. The spicy potatoes were also very nice. They had a nice crunch and were a little spicy and very good dipped in the ranch slaw.

For dessert, we had Snickers in a glass which was peanut mousse, caramel, chocolate and peanut praline for $13. This was my favourite dish of the night. It had a hard chocolate shell on top and the mousse had a strong peanut-chocolate taste. It was more than enough to share between the three of us. I would happily get it again.
