Located about 70km from Rockhampton and surrounded by pine forest plantation and also eucalypt trees in Byfield National Park, Conservation Park and State Forest, this water hole offers water-based activities such as swimming, canoeing or kayaking as well as a great picnic spot amongst an open grassy area.
There are a few different ways to enter the Stony Creek Byfield section of the park. Just turning onto the rough gravel road with signage on the side of the road that said "11km Upper Stony Road". Our little car was a little bit shaking. After 5 minutes of driving, we came to a smooth bitumen road. But before we could say "hooray", the road changed again into rough gravel. There were a few potholes that need to be avoided. We were crossing some floodway with flowing water because of rain a couple of days before. But in good weather conditions, this road doesn't need a 4WD.

Large grassy area perfect for picnic

Amenities block
At last, we arrived at the day-use area of Stony Creek, just passed the camping site. This area has picnic tables, automatic barbeques, toilets and a car park. No bins, so please take rubbish with you. The large grass area is perfect to lay out your picnic blanket or play some outdoor games.
The water is so fresh. You can bring some floaties, inflatables or pool noodles and enjoy a very relaxing swim with minimal effort. There's a rope swing hanging from one of the tree branches and we could see some people just reach it and jump into the water, over and over again doing it. On the other side of the creek is a great swallow place perfect for rock-hopping.

Be prepared for the wilderness
I could see some hiking or walking tracks along the creek. Venusta Circuit is an easy 900 metres track and Stony Creek Circuit is a moderate 4.3 metres track. Depending on rainfall, you could find very rewarding rock pools and small rapids with cascading waters at the end of the track.
Bring insect repellent and sun protection as well as drinking water and a first-aid kit and come prepared for nature and wilderness.
