A perfect read for a lazy afternoon
When I saw the cover of Eva Gates' book By Book Or By Crook I was immediately drawn in. A lighthouse, a book and a cat. What more could I ask for?
By Book Or By Crook is the first in the 'Lighthouse Library Mysteries' centred around librarian Lucy; a former Harvard librarian who is determined to start a new life away from high society responsibilities and a lifeless relationship.
Moving to her favourite place in the world, the Outer Banks, Lucy is excited to land a job as a librarian at the iconic Bodie Island Lighthouse Public Library.
Living in a lighthouse, working with nice people and escaping her life in Boston is exactly what Lucy needed. Until a priceless Jane Austen first edition is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered.
By Book Or By Crook lived up to all I'd hoped and more. The storyline was a straight forward cosy murder mystery, the characters well rounded and the main character very relatable; plus there's a library cat called Charles, who in my opinion deserves his own book!
I almost always focus on the positives in reviews, but it's worth mentioning that the editing in this book isn't the best. Despite being published by a well known publishing house, there are grammar mistakes that leave a reader scratching their head. Don't let this deter you from giving this book a chance - I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
