October is Buy Nothing New Month, which encourages us to spend the whole month completely dependent on bartering, swapping and op shopping for all our shopping needs. "What? Shopping for a whole month at Vinnie's," you cry. For many people such an existence would be a nightmare, but do not fear. In Adelaide, we have plenty of options. Not only has ye olde Vinnie's greatly improved in the past few years but with vintage coming back in style it's easy to grab a bargain and still look good.
Second hand and vintage stores have sprung up in Adelaide over the past few years like mushrooms in a Sylvia Plath poem, you just need to know where to look. Some stores that are well loved include Irving Baby, just off Rundle Mall, 33 Twin St (near the Jade Monkey), The Hive Emporium, 192 Prospect Road and Little Worn Wardrobe, 19 Peel St (just off Hindley St).
Some other options include your local op shop, markets or even your nearest garage sale. By buying nothing new not only do you save a ton of cash, you're also helping the environment by reducing landfill and supporting local business. So why not visit your local op shop, vintage boutique or market this weekend and give new life to clothing from bygone eras and a new life to your closet at an affordable price?
OARS Op Shops are in Woodville, Port Adelaide, Christies Beach and Elizabeth North. The Port and Elizabeth Shops have sales every Friday where ALL clothing is only $1.00 per item. The Elizabeth Store also has very cheap furniture!
