A piece of art work can really brighten up your home, whether it is a huge piece that becomes the room's feature wall, or a small painting that fits the decor just right. The question is, how do you know where to go to find great pieces of art? We've decided to enlist your help, so that we can find the best places in Melbourne to buy art. We're not talking Monets and Van Goghs, but unique pieces of art that will help make your house a home.

Galleries are a great place to start looking for pieces to buy, we're not talking huge galleries like the National Gallery of Victoria, but smaller ones that showcase immerging local artists. To get some great ideas you can check out the Art Almanac, a monthly magazine guiding you to some great galleries and exhibitions all around Australia. You can find an interesting range of art works at the Tolarno Galleries, or why not try the Outré Gallery. If you know some good ones then make sure you tell us about them.

It may seem strange, but if you've bought art before you'll probably know that cafes can be a great place to pick up some interesting pieces. Not only are there gallery cafes like the Empire Cafe Gallery, but plenty of other cafes will showcase local works from time to time. If you've ever come across a cafe that has a knack for showing interesting pieces of art, let us know where we can find it. A lot of these cafes will also have events where you get to meet the artist, so you'll get the opportunity to learn a bit more about your new artwork.

On top of these options there are also other places where you can pick up some works. Why not try garage sales, markets, or even the dump. You never know what other people may be getting rid of, or have already thrown out. If you've ever watched the show Fake or Fortune you'll know that even the most valuable art works can be found in the strangest places. You might find a talented local artist selling their paintings at the market, or just an interesting piece that someone else is sick of.

So if you've ever bought a piece of art, let us know where you got it, or if you know of a local artist that deserves recognition tell us where they sell their works. We want to know where you go to make your house unique.
