Yoga for all ages, abilities and fitness
I could hardly contain my excitement when I heard that a new yoga studio, Butterfly Yoga, had opened in Brisbane's beautiful bayside and offers my favourite form of yoga, Vinyassa! After attending just one class I was hooked and after meeting the owner, Abi Chambers, who is just so friendly and welcoming, I had to learn more, so I sat down with Abi while she shared her love of yoga and told me how Butterfly Yoga began.
Butterfly Yoga has long been the dream of Abi Chambers and her dream finally became a reality on the 17th of March 2014, when she opened the doors to her tranquil and centrally located studio on Redland Bay Road, Capalaba.
Abi's love of yoga has spanned over the last fifteen years, after she attended her first yoga class and fell in love with yoga and all the amazing benefits it offers. From this time on, Abi continued with her regular practice, but it was six years ago when Abi was faced with a family tragedy that she turned to yoga as a way of coping and found that yoga bought stillness to her mind, allowed her to live in the moment and brought a sense of calmness to her mind and body.
This event was the turning point for Abi and six years ago Abi undertook her teacher training and hasn't looked back. The past few years has seen Abi juggle both teaching yoga and the demands of a corporate job up until 15 months ago after the birth of her first child, which proved to be another turning point for Abi. Abi made the decision not to return to the corporate world and to follow her true passion, yoga. The time was right for Abi to turn her dream into a reality and saw the birth of Butterfly Yoga.
Abi wanted to make yoga accessible to everyone, from beginners to advanced and also recognised the need for a yoga studio that catered for all. Abi loves helping beginners and seeing them progress at their own pace, listening to their own bodies and working at their own pace.
Another passion for Abi is to help pregnant women and new mums and she recognises the challenges that many women face. From women who experience anxiety throughout their pregnancy or the many aches and pains pregnancy can manifest, pregnancy yoga can teach mothers to be, how to breathe correctly, which in turn will assist with their labour and also teaches the skills of mindfulness, which is a great antidote to anxiety.
Abi's other classes, Mum's and Bubs' and Mum's and Active Bubs', offer a very nurturing and fun way for new mothers to bond with their babies and provides a unique platform for mothers to share their concerns and feelings in a safe environment with other mum's who are also finding their feet in the world of motherhood. Not forgetting the children, Abi also runs children's yoga classes for kids aged 3-8, which are also very popular and assist children to relieve stress, be active and develop confidence.
Abi also runs yoga for beginner's classes, to introduce people to the wonderful world of yoga and explore the many benefits of regular practice.
For others, like me, who are Vinyassa devotee's, Abi also offers creative Vinyassa and Power Vinyassa classes and is very excited to have just added Ashtanga classes to the mix. Abi truly does cater for everyone's tastes and abilities. Abi is also proud of her dedicated and caring teaches and believes that she is truly blessed to have found such a great team and amazing space for the studio.
Looking to the future Abi wants Butterfly Yoga to be known as an inclusive yoga studio, where everyone is welcome, serving the local community where people from all walks of life can come to connect and find their stillness within. "It's great to see people walk out with a smile on their face after class" says Abi.
One thing is for sure, I'm definitely hooked and have never felt so at home and welcome as I do at Butterfly Yoga. Look forward to seeing you there!
