The Butterfly Club

Last night, I fell in love with the city, again.

It is easy to lose inspiration when the winter days are short and dismally cold. Last night was no different. The wind cut like sharp steel, but there was something in the air that whispered of potential.

We darted down Carson Lane toward the mysterious 'Butterfly Club', while the wind whipped our hair into a wild frenzy. Two abandoned empty beer cans clambered and clanked as they danced together along the cold concrete.

[ADVERT]Once inside, my girlfriends and I smoothed our hair down before proceeding up the creaky old wooden steps.

The 'Butterfly Club' doesn't appear to be anything special from the outside. It's just a plain-coloured, unimposing building at the end of an alleyway. Only the warm colours within the windows allude to the eclectic, creative spaces inside.

The sultry bluesy voice of Billie Holiday lured us into an intimate, dimly lit room. We sipped on cocktails and felt transported to another era.

The building is divided into a maze of small rooms. Each room is filled with secret treasures that you could spend ages exploring. Books, figurines, puppets and old pictures line the walls, while cosy mismatched living-room furniture welcomes you in. It is a hoarder's dream and it is worth coming just to explore the décor, but this night, we were brought to the 'Butterfly Club' to get a taste of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival with "The Best of the Fest".

The show was in a cosy, intimate room. I had the feeling I was being entertained in an old-style parlour while the performers sang and played right in front of me. The highlight was the shockingly talented and beautiful Mama Alto, whose rendition of 'Summertime' sent shivers down my spine.

The magic of the night followed us back into the bone-chilling cold. The winter blues, however, could not reach me. I was too inspired and moved by the beauty of the performances, by the creativity of people and by the eccentric and eclectic use of space within the city that I live. The wind spoke only of possibility and of secrets to be explored.

***Unfortunately, The Cabaret Festival ends this weekend. However, the 'Butterfly Club' is host to an array of shows year round. So go for a show or go for the space itself. You will not be disappointed. ***
