The Butterfly Club - Curated Summer Program 2017/18

The Butterfly Club is one of the most vibrant, active and diverse performance venues in Melbourne, if not Australia. Last year around 1300 shows took place in their venues and things don't look they are slowing down as they launch their curated Summer program.

Owner and Director Simone Pulga and Artistic Director Xander Woollard have created an incredibly diverse and fun Summer program which also encourages and engages in important discourse. All of it, of course, accompanied by their signature themed cocktails. We got a sneak peek...taste...of the 'Are You Betty To Grumble' and I promise you will not be grumbling after a swig of this zinger!.

This leads into their explosive start to the season with Betty Grumble: Love and Anger . Betty Grumble is a Green Room award winner for 'Most Innovative Use of Cabaret'. Obviously breaking more barriers than ever, a sorrowful Pulga admitted to having to veto the use of a live firecracker inserted in body parts to 'establish character' due to safety compliances. If, after Grumble, you need a bit of a touch of normal you can come to The Man In Moon which is a somewhat more traditional approach to cabaret although still chock full of new Australian music. Complete with a 3-piece band, Pulga assures us this is a show for the Glitterati of Melbourne.

Speaking of Christmas, More Pudding Anyone? Nobody understands Christmas anymore. The only thing we all agree on is it is stressful and leads to sore feet and empty wallets. Whilst you are in the city trawling the stores take a quick break (all shows are only an hour long), grab a 'Merry Cosmopolitan', and let the people on stage replace your pain and fatigue with laughter and joy as they show you there are people doing it worse. Then, once the yuletide season has come and gone, you can celebrate your inner cynic by coming to see a magician who doesn't believe in magic. Genuinely Impossible will have you challenging your friends for hours trying to figure the tricks out after seeing Lawson Reeves assure you magic does not exist.

Cell, Block Tango: Showtunes On Modern Dating is "Tinder dating expressed in music," according to Pulga. With his irresistible dry wit Pulga suggests this show is perfect first date material giving you both an opportunity to laugh and cry together at shared experiences of disaster and success - and obviously disaster again or this wouldn't be a first date...? When I Awoke is a huge undertaking for The Butterfly Club. A chamber opera with a 3-piece musical ensemble, if you still have a thing for Phillip Glass you will love this tale of a woman surveying the wreckage of her life before coming home to Australia.

Love Bird is a show you shouldn't miss and one you will never see on the main stages of the world. It is, however, perfect for what Pulga calls "A building which could be a brothel but is actually a theatre". Where else could you possibly see theatre about a child using a cockatoo as a sex toy? Continuing the themes of sexual diversity Cleave explores freak culture. Colleen Burke is one of those rare individuals born with twin sex organs and Cleave explores what it has meant to be diverse in the world of Carnivale.

Plunging into bewitching ballads and spine-tingling tales Mikelangelo & Anushka: Siblings takes over The Butterfly Club in February. Mikelangelo was last on their stage in 2012 and his new show will ask you the question 'what kind of show do you really like?' Finally, Summer finishes with a look at the Bible in Delilah. Reworking this biblical tale, Delilah explores the boundaries between bad situations and lethal ones - and it does not leave her looking good at all... But don't worry, a 'Samson & Tequila' will wash the pain away.

All shows are only an hour long. This launch focused on the 8:30pm sessions but The Butterfly Club shows 4 performances a night so pop in after work, grab a cocktail and stay for a show or two, or three and wind down in one the most unique and relaxed venues in town.
