2017 Update: Please note in late 2016 this cafe had a makeover, was rebranded and renamed JB & Sons Booze and Burgers. Same owners, same location but different concept. JB & Sons first opened up for business in early 2015 in Freshwater. Initially, a small shop where they excelled at Burgers. JB & Sons Booze and Burgers is now one of the best Burger makers on the northern beaches. They also serve American style breakfasts, fried chicken, specialty coffees, cocktails and awesome craft beers. Check out their new website for menu details.

appeared quietly just after Christmas and I have been meaning to drop in since the day it opened. Now all the locals are onto it and it's going full steam ahead.
For many years the space on the corner of Pacific Parade and The Strand had an Indian restaurant and a couple more shops. Unless you wanted Indian food, most of the locals would bypass this corner without a blink.
Chef
Dave Lawrence and co-owners
George McLean and
Paul Fraser (The owners of
Hemingway's and
JB & Sons Burger Bar ) have taken on the Dee Why locals. So far their new venture is proving to be a hit feeding the locals their healthy Aussie style tucker.
The decor has a fresh Scandinavian feel to the design. The entrance and bar room is painted in serene sterling blue highlighting the natural oak bar, leather booths and high bench tables.
The main feature at the entrance being the custom designed bright yellow La Marzocco Coffee Machine churning out brews from
Barrel One Roasters . This is the ideal coffee machine location, as you can just order and collect through the open window without the hassle of entering. Ideal if you just want a coffee and take away bacon egg roll on your way to work or beach.
The second room has whitewashed brick walls and slate blue bench seats with shelves of Wine. You can feel a nice sea breeze flowing through the open windows.
Moving through to the buttercup yellow room, tan leather banquette seating lines the dividing wall with shelves of pickled veges.
Here you can gaze out on the street and watch the forever passing parade of locals heading to the beachfront. Lamp shades and exposed filament bulbs shed a warm glow. At one end of the room is the open kitchen. I enjoy seeing the Chef's at work. Open plan kitchens for me create a sense of 'having nothing to hide' and I feel gains trust from the patrons.
Open all day, the kitchen churns out comfort food you might have grown up with, using age old techniques such as pickling, smoking and curing to deliver a menu inspired by country cooking the Aussie homestead way.
The
Breakfast menu consists of all your favourites, Toasties, bacon & egg rolls, even good ol crispy house-made crumpets drenched in whipped butter and a spread of choice. Or you could try for a hangover cure of tender 12 hr smoked Wagyu Brisket and Egg Roll or the heartiest morning dish - Ploughmans Breakfast.
Lunch has a variety of choices ranging from a simple Ham Sandwich, Country Croquettes, Roast Vege Salad, Burger, Fish and Chips, Steak or a crispy Panko crumbed Chicken Parmi.
I chose a Roast Veg Salad with Panko Chicken Strips and a fresh Watermelon Mint Juice.
My daughter chose Brookvale Brewery Lager Battered Crumbed Flathead and Chips with a coffee. The beer batter crumb was perfectly crispy and the fish was tender and juicy with tasty fries.
There was plenty coming out of the kitchen even though it was after 2pm. Brisket rolls, JB's Papi Burgers and Eggplant Parmi.
Dinner offers similar snacks, shares of different vegetable dishes, rissoles, King Prawns and bigger fare - BBQ Lamb, a different roast dinner each night, Scotch Fillet and more. Of course for dessert you can enjoy a seasonal fruit crumble, or an all time Australian favourite Trifle, maybe like Nan might have made - unfortunately I didn't get to find out as they were out of Trifle. I'm pretty keen to return just to try the Trifle!
We all love cocktails and here you won't be disappointed. An imaginative list will seduce you going for $17 each or try one from their happy hour selection after 4pm - 6pm daily for $10.
Australian Wines by the glass range from $8 -$12, Bottles from $35 upwards. Local Aussie Boutique Beers from Brookvale Beers and Four Pines - Tins $5, Tap from $7.50. You can even buy a Bintang.
