I have wanted to try Buskers Restaurant/Cafe at the Beehive Corner end of Rundle Mall for quite some time but have just never gotten around to it before now. The interior of its little marquee provides a nice escape from the bustle of the mall and the coffee and cake deal is $8, so not super cheap but not expensive either and you can choose between carrot, chocolate or cheesecake.
When we entered there were dirty dishes left on a few tables which wasn't the best look. The service was fine, but with three staff members that I could see things should've been running a bit more smoothly. There didn't seem to be much team-work or communication going on. The few trees inside are a nice touch, but they don't quite manage to make you forget you're in Rundle Mall.
The idea of the cafe is a good one, and as I said it did provide a nice little escape from the hectic mall. However, there wasn't much else to recommend a return visit. In the film 10 Things I Hate About You, there's an exchange about the word 'whelmed' where one slightly ditsy character says to another, 'I know you can be underwhelmed, and you can be overwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?' To which her equally ditsy friend replies, 'I think in Europe you can.' This exchange pretty much sums up my trip to Buskers. It wasn't great, and it wasn't terrible, but after my experience today I don't know if I'd return again.
There are other places close by where you can get a better coffee and if you're really looking for a lovely meal in a place oozing ambiance then, sadly, you probably won't find it in Rundle Mall.
