Much has been written about getting the right balance between family life and pursuing a career.

For women, in particular, it can be a huge challenge and for some more of a challenge than most.

To celebrate the role women play in family life, three inspirational women will share their experience of the kind of challenges they have faced and overcome at a special dinner for Business Women of Australia's Women of Inspiration Dinner in May.



The dinner, at Royal Perth Yacht Club on Thursday, May 9 at 6.30pm, will showcase cuisine from Spain and Italy as well as an Australian inspired dish to reflect the heritage of the three speakers.

Chef Simon George and his team from the Royal Perth Yacht Club will prepare the meal to be complemented by a selection of wines from Great Southern producer 3drops.

The event will raise funds for MercyCare's First Time Ever Fund for children in Out Of Home Care aimed at creating joyful experiences to develop potential in young people.

The three speakers are:

Forensic scientist, Paola Magni, who spends her days investigating criminals and crimes that show how cruel people can be and then goes home to assume a normal family life as a woman, mother and wife.

She somehow has to separate work and family life to protect her family and the community by not sharing her work experiences, but instead to help people identify the monsters and fight their fears.

Businesswoman, inspirational speaker and author, Vida Carlino, had her life torn apart as a five-year-old when her father was killed in a work accident.

Vida was made a ward of the state and she was separated from her seven siblings.

She moved from school to school, had the shock of sitting with a friend when he died from an asthma attack, fought for an education before getting married and then lost her own four-month-old son.

Alcohol and self-medication didn't help, Vida discovered a self-help group which helped her to stand up and recognise her own quality and set her on the road to success.

Katheryn Johnson was told she would never have children and was stunned by an unplanned pregnancy at 17, but quickly discovered the joys of being a mother.

She went on to work at a refuge where seeing families in distress prompted her to consider how she could help. Since then, 27 children have called Katheryn's house home in emergency and short term care foster care, including five who are a permanent part of the family.

Katheryn will share her thoughts on her rollercoaster family experience and how love and good parenting can change the lives of children who have experienced trauma.
