An open garden weekend will be held at Burra and surrounds on the weekend of 1st and 2nd of October 2016.

The open gardens in the Burra district has now received funding and hopefully will continue as an annual event in South Australia's mid north. The event has now grown into a festival to celebrate gardening and is a must for anyone who loves gardening or those who like to look at gardens for an enjoyable weekend leisure activity.

Events kick off with an opening on Saturday morning at Market Square in the middle of town. There will be market stalls with a range of locally goods and produce for sale. A scarecrow competition will see the Market Square bright and buzzing with all the scarecrow entries on display. The competition will be judged at 11am, by ABC radio presenter Angela Smallacombe, with some fab prizes. If you would like to enter the scarecrow competition see here

Entertainment with include local busker Jeff Stace, and a face painter for kids. A barbecue breakfast and lunch will be available or stop by one of the many cafes for a refuel between garden visits. Activities will wind up around noon to allow time for garden visits in the afternoon.

Starting in the square is a good idea as you can pick up your garden location maps here at the market or the visitor centre. They will also be available online closer to the date. There are 11 gardens covering 3 towns, so there is more than enough to see and do in town for a whole weekend. Gardens at nearby Hallett will only be open on the Sunday.

Some of the gardens will offer workshops, while others have teas in the garden on offer. All the owners will be on hand for you to ask questions about their gardens.

Burra is a heritage copper mining town in the mid north, about two hours drive form Adelaide. It is now farming country with the gardens established to grown under extreme conditions by the owners. The plants have to be able to tolerate frosts and Wnter temperatures to -8 up to scorching heat in Summer to the mid 40s.

Why not make a weekend escape and stay in town a night. Accommodation is available in town including a caravan park, miners cottages, a motel and old country pubs. there are many B&B's, cafes, restaurants and hotels. Photos available of the accommodation types are available on the tourism website here. Bring enough cash with you for your weekend out. The supermarket closes at noon on Saturday.
