A weekend to indulge your gardening senses

Get ready for a spectacular weekend of country hospitality! Burra Districts Open Gardens returns on the weekend of 17 & 18 October with a jam-packed program of family-friendly attractions, interactive workshops, a great art exhibition, engaging meet & greets with authors and a fabulous line-up of local stallholders!

The annual Burra Districts Open Gardens proudly showcases the creativity of the Mid North Heritage Region, from glorious gardens to fabulous food and superb scenery, all within an hour's drive of Burra.

This is a special opportunity to immerse yourself in both the town and farm gardens proudly created by their owners. Plus enjoy the vibrant festival atmosphere with special guest writers, local artists & artisans and bustling stallholders offering original wares.

Here are the 2020 Burra Districts Open Gardens program highlights:

  • Special Guests in the Gardens: Well known horticultural personality, lecturer and avid gardener Karen Montgomery, will MC the event. Karen is well known at Open Gardens and is more than happy to answer your gardening questions and share her experience. Karen was honoured last year by the Nursery and Garden Industry Awards with the 'Doug Smart Award' for passion and commitment to the promotion of good gardening in SA.

Other special guests include Dr Lucy Sutherland, the Director of Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium and a keen advocate for Horticultural Therapy and Trevor Nottle, an author, speaker, member of Open Gardens SA and intrepid garden traveller, who is committed to growing the best plants for your area.

  • Burra Gallery - Art of the Flower and Garden 2020: Burra's Art of the Flower and Garden, with its charm and energy, is an annual springtime exhibition and a local tradition. Come and view this year's entries in the Main Gallery. Complementing the exhibition is Gardeners of Goyder in the Bence Room, featuring a display of gardener's work, including embroidery, cartoons and weaving.

  • Authors in the Gardens: A chance to meet authors, whose lives have been inspired by the beautiful world of plants. They will present talks in the gardens and share their journey. Writers include Penelope and Tansy Curtin, Kaye Kessing, Christine McCabe and Trevor Nottle.

  • FREE Workshop for Ticket Holders - Breaking The Barriers Let the Sun Shine on Your Life: Horticultural Therapy: Dr. Lucy Sutherland, Director of Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium, will introduce you to the many aspects of Garden Therapy, which plants are good for different circumstances, as well as those important to different cultures. Karen Montgomery will open the doors to producing a garden from the beginning, how plants, in turn, help you make more for your garden and friends. Get the satisfaction of taking a small piece of plant material, helping it to grow roots, then flourish as a proud addition to your plot. Reserve your spot now at Eventbrite.

  • Sunday Treat for Classic Car Lovers: A blast from the past with vintage and veteran vehicles on display! Come along and feast your eyes. Plus the church committee will have tea, coffee and cake. Remember to keep an eye out as you may even see them being driven around town!

  • FREE Kids Workshop for Ticket Holders - Magic and Mayhem - The Wonderful Fairyesque World of Sarah Cheesmur: Meet Sarah Stiltskin Cheesmur and her offsider Remy Catchlove, masters of the dress up and creators of magic from nothing. Kids can learn to create their own characters and adventures by unleashing their imagination and stepping into backwards land of handmade play and fun. Parental supervision is required. Reserve your spot now at Eventbrite.

  • Stalls in the Gardens: Be tempted by local art, pottery, country cartoon calendars, blacksmithing, recycling, plants and more. There will also be books and goodies from Friends of The Adelaide Botanic Gardens.
