I had a fantastic night out last Saturday at
The BurlyQ Club , a brand new dinner, and variety show, hosted at St Kilda's Greyhound Hotel.
The seductive and exciting show featured headline act
Sina King (Miss Burlesque Australia) along with a host of world-class entertainers including performances by burlesque stars
Zelia Rose and
Jacqueline Furey , raucous comedy with
Aurora Kurth , sword swallowing by femme fatale
Elle Diablo , hula hoop artistry by
Hannie Helsden , rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatics, dance and aerial hoop by
Lauren Skopalova and partner, and various acts by circus artist
Rowan Thomas .
The show began with various acts including the can-can girls:
Moving on to a captivating performance by the stunning Zeila Rose:
Before some more sexually charged pieces:
In between acts, we were treated to the kooky-fun antics and comedic stylings of Mistress of Ceremonies, Aurora Kurth. Everyone cheered each time Aurora's character took the stage, even those she plucked out of the audience, made fun of, and at times, tied up.
One of the many highlights for me was Lauren Skopalova, in both her gymnastic/dance and aerial routines, Skopalova kept the entire audience in a trance following her every provocative movement, whether it be a contorionistic twist/flip/jump, or simply a flick of her hair.
Expectedly, Sina King's routine was spectacular; an engaging mix of smooth dance moves, elegant striptease, and snakes; but I don't want to give too much away...
Although I booked for the show-only option, club-goers I talked to had nothing but finger-licking thumbs up for the three-course dinner that came with their tickets; the menu options include salt and pepper squid with lime aioli, porterhouse steak, among others. The Greyhound's kitchen also caters to gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and nut-free diets. Scroll down the page to check out the club's menu
here .
After the show, guests have some time to meet, greet, and take pictures with the cast, before attending the free after party (same location). The after party gives the audience a turn to take over the dance floor and enjoy a colourful drag show - which I must admit to being a bit too far into the champagne bucket to fully take in.
What made this show extra special to me was not just that every single performer more than loves what they do (their passion is contagious on stage), but that they all have completely unique ways of doing it. Each act had the crowd's full attention, be it for their stage presence alone, dancing talent, seductive skills, or command over a live reptile!
Absolutely 5 stars.
