A unique high tea that's all about the burgers and beer
A high tea is usually a dainty affair where you sip tea from elegant porcelain cups and enjoy a delicate assortment of tiny cakes, pastries, sandwiches and scones arranged ever so carefully on three-tiered platters.
However, the high tea at Beef & Barley on the Kingston Foreshore is not your traditional kind of high tea. For one thing, there's no tea. Instead, there's beer. Even bottomless schooners of beer, if you want. And there are no tiny cucumber sandwiches here. It's all about the burgers at Beef & Barley. So you get burgers. And popcorn chicken. And lots of fries.
I've had plenty of high teas in the past, all of them the traditional kind, so I was very intrigued by the idea of a Burger High Tea. I have to admit that I wasn't overly excited about the thought of a high tea without the usual cucumber sandwiches and tea and scones. For me, a high tea without cucumber sandwiches is like Christmas without a Christmas tree or Halloween without pumpkins! (Yes, for me, it's that extreme!) But after feasting on a Burger High Tea, I don't think I'll ever look at a cucumber sandwich again.
So what's included in a Beef & Barley High Tea? Well, for only $40 per person (which is a lot cheaper than most other high teas in Canberra) you get: a platter loaded with popcorn chicken with sriracha mayo, beer battered chips with aioli, and halloumi bites; a platter crowded with pulled pork sliders and mini beef burgers, accompanied with house slaw with mango mayo, Guindilla peppers wrapped in prosciutto, and whole pickles; and a top platter filled with an assortment of bite-sized sweets such as macarons, caramelised popcorn and mini lamingtons.
And of course, drinks are included in your high tea. You get the choice of a schooner of draught beer, a glass of bubbly, cider, or soft drinks. You can also choose to have bottomless draught beer or bubby for an extra $20 per person. And all draught beer is provided by local ACT suppliers.
Beef & Barley offers a unique high tea experience that is scrumptious, generous and very, very filling. The wait staff are very friendly and helpful, there's a cheerful and relaxed vibe in the air, and the windows and doors open out to gorgeous views of the waterfront. It's a perfect way to spend an afternoon with friends or family.
