Fancy a refreshing dip without the crowds or the chlorine?

For 10 years, I was living less than 15 minutes away from this secret swimming hole and had never heard of it.

At Bunya Crossing Reserve in Brisbane's North West (Albany Creek) you can swim for free in the peaceful South Pine River.

There's heaps of room in float around in peace. Or practise your strokes, if you're feeling energetic.

Or maybe you want to stroll under the trees first, following the easy paths along the riverside.

You can also spread a picnic blanket on the grass or cook some snags on the BBQ while the kids kick a ball around.

Any fur-kids are welcome too if they're on a lead (but be prepared as many dogs aren't, although those I have seen off leash kept their distance from us).

If you've got a kayak or stand up paddle board to bring down, the good news is the carpark is close to the water. No need to carry your stuff far.

Handy to know: As well as a picnic table, BBQ and bins, there's also a toilet here.

Don't expect powdery-white sand along the river - the bank is gravelly. With a fold-up chair or thick towel, you can relax right by the water in comfort.
