Bundoora Park , to the North East of Melbourne, is well known for its huge expanse of parkland, numerous children's playgrounds, Children's Farm and the historic Cooper's Settlement . But have you discovered the more modern , which in my opinion is the jewel in the crown of this area? Not only is it an inviting and enchanting play area, but conveniently for the parents it's situated bang next door to the Farm Cafe so you can sip your latte whilst the kids burn off some energy.

The was opened in 2010 and is a beautiful playground for all ages. The combination of natural elements and play equipment has been carefully planned to provide a really engaging play experience for youngsters (and the young at heart). There's tons of space so even if it gets busy you don't really notice the hordes of children.

Natural features include a lovely little stream which trickles under bridges, through lovely squishy mud and over rocks and pebbles. The stream is created by the children themselves, through the use of an old fashioned hand pump. Expect wet socks and shoes, because no child can resist the lure of water play. Plenty of trees, bushes and shrubs provide natural boundaries throughout the playground, separating it into different areas.

Giant bull ants will delight younger children with their realistic appearance. My toddler was all for hitching a ride on the back of one of these insects. A nod to the Children's Farm is evident in the very appealing, shiny, red tractor which stimulated the vivid imagination of my four year old boy. The wooden maze has a surprise around every corner, with bendy mirrors, tunnels, stained glass butterflies and even a horse thrown in for good measure.

What is a playground without sand? A large sandpit complete with digger and a stone waterfall will delight toddlers. The waterfall is fed by little taps positioned in the sandpit, again operable by the children, although these didn't appear to be working on our visit. Close to the sandpit are a range of swings and a lovely soft-fall mound from which two slides descend.

Brightly coloured rocking insects and a range of other slides, roundabouts and climbing structures are also featured. When your children tire of the playground they can grab a milkshake from the Farm Cafe which seemed to be very child friendly, or visit the farm and historic settlement which are a stone's throw away. This playground is a real winner for all age groups, so swing by if you're in the area, or make a day of it by visiting some of the other parts of Bundoora Park.
