For many of us, thinking about Saturday mornings is like entertaining the existence of talking cats; we know that they could exist, but we've never actually seen one before. Whether you're stuck nursing a hangover, or avoiding your kid's Saturday cartoons, waking up early on Saturdays is never easy.

We're creatures of incentive - promise me a cornetto and I'll do practically anything - and the same applies to getting up for the Bundoora Farmers Market. The promise of fresh vegetables, great food and a warm communal atmosphere is enough to rouse even the most ardent weekend napper into action.

The market is run on the first Saturday of every month in Bundoora Park, just off Plenty Road, Bundoora between 8am-1pm. It's a collection of over thirty stalls offering home made ice-creams, great Indian food, fresh produce, salad dressings, jam and kasundi. Not only does this give you the chance to bag a heap of taste testers, it is also a great practical resource for buying moderately priced gourmet produce.

Most of the bustle is earlier in the morning, so if you are keen to avoid crowds swing round 11 am for a more relaxed market experience.

There are too many stalls to list, but after guzzling our fair share of taste testers, here are a few to watch out for.

Killara Rise / Little Creatures Cattle Company:

Killara Rise and Little Creatures Cattle specialise in producing great meat. They are a bit more expensive than buying at the local market, but the meat quality is great – and you are buying directly from the producer. If you are feeling cautious, start off with ordering the lean beef mince (it's pretty good) and see what you think. One draw back is that you need to order prior to visiting the market, so make sure you go on the website first. Also on their website are the other farmers markets they visit.

New Leaf:

These guys focus on making specialised dressings and chutney. After speaking with the owner, he informed us that his preserves had been given second prize for produce at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and had also been written up in Epicure. Not too shabby. He also has a wide selection of samplers that are well worth trying. Try their tangy mustard salad dressing!

Chai Spice :

After diving in for the spiciest dip that she had, the lady behind the stall sympathetically offered us a selection of her Chai drinks. Her Chai infused ginger beer was a great twist on that familiar favourite that cooled me down straight away.
