Picture a lovely little village in the Southern Highlands brimming with charm, throw in an array of fun with workshops and a street party, and you've got a colourful weekend the whole family will enjoy. That's Winterfest in Bundanoon and it's just 2hrs from Sydney, making it a great escape from the big smoke.

The program of workshops involves a multitude of businesses that will have you learning a variety of new skills. You can try your hand at pizza making, tie-dyeing, felting, travel sketching, pet rock painting, making balloon animals or bath bombs. The Funky Zoo is an educational musical story that gets young children participating in singing and craft activities, whilst the Emotional Intelligence and Mindfulness workshop will see adults looking at what these terms mean and putting the skills into practice. No matter your age, there's something for everyone. Prices range from $5 and up. Spaces are limited, so you'll want to get in quick. Click here for further information/booking.

With the festival theme of "Back to the Street", the downtown street party on Saturday, around Church St and Railway Ave, is one event highlight you won't want to miss. These main streets of the town are set to become a wonderland of entertainment from 5pm-9pm with live music and roving performers, amusement rides that don't cost an arm and a leg, international food offerings and a host of surprises, whilst braziers keep you warm and cosy in the winter night chill.

A gold coin donation will get you into this party where home-grown artists will entertain onlookers. The likes of the Bundanoon Ukesters and Bundanoon Sings are participating in addition to others across multiple sites on the streets. The Vocal Muster, a Southern Highlands charity providing opportunities for local emerging young artists to showcase their work, are thrilled to also have 14 artists performing across the Winterfest site.

Rides and activities on party night include a ferris wheel, turbo tubs that allow you to control the thrill as you increase the spin of your individual tub to a speed of your choice, a rock climbing wall where you can challenge your friends and activate a buzzer at the top to inform the operators of the fastest climber, and a giant snow globe to immerse yourself in. A wristband will cost you a mere $5 and entitles the wearer to ride all rides all night.

When it comes to food, a range of tasty delights will be available from local establishments and street vendors. The array includes Three Amigos Taco Truck, Little Jack's Thai, Bundanoon Chinese, Kielty's Irish, Hot Potato Van, Emmy's Gozleme, Potter's Pantry, Primula Cafe, DeliLicious, Bundanoon Hotel, Bundanoon Lions Club Gluwein & BBQ, The Strudel Lady, OMG Donuts, Lush Berries and The Hot Chocolate Bar, amongst old fashioned snow cone machines, and more.

Closing out the street party will be a special "Let Your Light Shine" parade, beginning at 8.45pm in Osborne St. Marching down Railway Ave to Church St, it is led by Glenda the Glow Worm (a 6m-long street puppet), the Wandering Stars Stilt Walkers, the Bundanoon Pipe Band and Bundanoon Public School carrying specially-made lanterns to light up the night. Locals or visitors in town on 25th June (11am-2pm) can participate in a lantern making workshop with international artist Tracy Luff for just $15 per person. Taking place at the Soldiers Memorial Hall, the fee covers all materials, including a pole and light. If you want to join the parade, it's free but you will need to register .

It will be a day and night to remember, but wait, there's more. On Sunday, from 8.30am-2pm, the Bundanoon Makers Market on the grounds and in the hall of Bundanoon Public School (14 Church St) is your chance to shop for some unique items. There's everything from fresh local produce and homemade cakes, jams, chutneys and sauces to take-home meals, delicious food stalls serving up international flavoursome food and a coffee van, as well as art and craft products that include woodwork, forged items, ceramics, jewellery, knitted goods, natural skincare products and more. Music also features here.

What a weekend and if you can hang around a bit longer, you'll find Bundanoon has a lot more to offer and engage in. From delightful cafes and shops to art on display, bushwalking and cycling trails, the magical Glow Worm Glen, and the waterfalls and wildlife in nearby Morton National Park, you won't be disappointed with the 'Bundy' of the Southern Highlands.
