Tucked away amongst the bushland behind Nowra is Bundanon, a place of creativity, learning and deep connection to the Australian landscape. Once home to iconic Australian artist Arthur Boyd, the Boyd family opened Bundanon to visitors in 1993, creating a place where art, music, education, culture and the environment intersect to enrich and inspire those lucky enough to pay a visit.

Located on 1100 hectares of Wadi Wadi land, the house and studio are surrounded by sandstone, riverbeds and iconic Australian landmarks such as Pulpit Rock, a sight that inhabits many of Boyd's landscape paintings. Visitors are welcomed into the Boyd Homestead, where a wide variety of Boyd family artworks are exhibited amongst the furnished 19th Century home, presented in a manner that feels authentic and intimate. Our host Judy was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Bundanon, leading us through the rooms with enthusiasm and expertise. Amongst Boyd's large scale oil paintings, are delicate watercolours by his grandmother Emma Minnie Boyd, iconic oil paintings by Charles Blackman and Brett Whiteley, and a wide range of ceramic and bronze sculptures by Boyd's siblings, Guy, David and Lucy.

Just beyond the house sits Arthur Boyd's studio. Seemingly untouched, the space beams with the presence of Boyd, from his paint-drenched jumper to his loaded palette. The room is brimming with Boyd's paintings, tools and precious objects that tell stories of Bundanon.

The Boyd Homestead and Studio are open to visitors on Sundays from 10.30am until 4.00pm, and talks on the lawn are at 11.30am and 2pm. Visiting the homestead following one of these talks is encouraged, as it is sure to enrich your visit. A ticket is $10 and includes a visit to the homestead, studio and the surrounding bushland, where there are a variety of walking tracks. Enjoy a complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits on the lawn, or bring your own picnic lunch.

The word Bundanon in Dharawal translates as 'steep rocky gully' which shares a little insight into the drive there! From Nowra, the drive to Bundanon is about half an hour, but allow a little more time as the gravel road can be a little unpredictable, particularly following wet weather.
