You’ll Never Eat Any Other Chicken Nugget Again
Even the kids commented on how clean it was. Seating outside in the warmer weather too.
I've probably been over thinking the name but my first thought when I heard Buk Buk was that it sounded more like the name of a horse stable. I also thought you would have to be careful how you said it around hearing-impaired friends. Then I remembered the noise that Pecky, Blackey and Whitey (RIP) used to make just before laying an egg.
The truth is that Louie, according to his proud wife Kanella, is really good at impersonating animals, particularly chickens. He was a little shy in the shop so I never got to hear his famous 'buk buks'.
Healthy and favorite chicken dishes at a very cheap price
The logos were drawn up for an earlier name. The shop was nearly called Rooster Station because they are located just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Glenferrie railway station. I think the name Buk Buk chicken is perfect for these bubbly, happy-go-lucky, young husband and wife team Louie and Kanella.
There is obviously a need for healthy chicken takeaway and eatery like they serve at Buk Buk Healthy Chicken Bar. Although they have only been open about two months they already have regular customers and they know what they will order. While we were there one came in. Louie later told me that the young man had started coming in three days ago and been in every day since. He was interested in how the shop was going and was raving about freshness of the chicken and the tasty chips. We too would like to know the secret spice ingredients on the chips.
Take away is about 50% of sales
The chicken at Buk Buk is cooked in an oven using the latest French technology which is popular in Queensland. The chicken is cooked over steaming water and lemon which keeps in the moisture. Kanella said that if you cut the chicken while it's really hot it can sometimes burst open because it's so moist. She told me that they both love chicken and eat it pretty much every day.
Tastes even better than it looks!
The most popular meal is the chicken, steamed brown rice chicken, and garden salad and that's what I chose. For only $9.50 I was amazed at how large this meal actually was. The chicken could not have been more tender and where brown rice is sometimes dry and hard this was moist soft and very tasty.
You couldn't have a chicken shop without chips and gravy. These are also popular on a cold day. My kids chose the nuggets and chips. I had planned to stop at Mc Donald's on the way home to compare the value but I didn't bother after tasting these. It wouldn't matter how much they cost, there's absolutely no comparison between these melt it in the mouth fresh chicken breast nuggets and those you buy at the fast food chains. Buk Buk chicken nuggets were served with a large bowl of sauce. It's way more than I would normally allow my kids and this was the icing on the cake for them.
I was a bit slow with the photography. The kids devoured their food pretty quickly.
The meals cater for those looking for a healthy meal and tailored to suit the locals. Thousands of budget conscious students alight the train everyday. For five dollars they can buy a six pack of nuggets or for eight dollars a 12 pack. They also sell chicken rolls and are testing out the demand for chicken wraps. An impressive coffee machine awaits your order. Between 12 and 2pm on weekdays it's standing room only in the Buk Buk chicken shop.
You can see the tasty spices
Louie and Kanella are also hoping to attract local families getting off the train at night, so on Tuesdays and Thursdays they are open until 8 PM. Family packs are available. It sounds like a good idea for a meal for a busy family to me.
Drop in for a coffee
The laneway and Glenferrie Road have many different types of eateries so the competition is high, therefore the quality has to be excellent. They only use La lonica chickens.
If their honeymoon period in Hawthorn is anything to go by you may soon see other Buk Buk Healthy Chicken Bar franchise outlets in your suburb. They are worth driving out of your way for.
Find this laneway off Glenferrie Rd and you're nearly there
