It's all about speed at the Ipswich Art Gallery this summer.

In the Built for Speed exhibition, kids can design and build a Lego hot rod, supercar or dragster. Then they can race it up and down ramps and along tracks.

The activity is free and runs until February 19, 2012. It is recommended for children aged from four until 12 years.

The Ipswich Art Gallery is also hosting a series of kids workshops during the Summer holidays. In December children can make unique Christmas Car Crackers. Kids will be provided with cardboard tubes, colourful ribbon, card and all the tools they need to create a cracker with a difference on December 15 and December 16, 2011 (for one hour from 10.30am until 11.30am and 1pm until 2pm). Complete with a surprise inside, kids can take them home to crack with friends and family. This activity is suitable for children aged between six and eleven years.

In January there is a Crazy Cars workshop. During the crazy cars workshop children will team up with an adult to create a car from recycled materials and the Makedo connector system. Using their imaginations and a toolkit of Makedo clips and corners, children will create a car, and be able to take it home. This one hour workshop is on January 9, January 11 and January 13, 2012 at 10.30am until 11.30am and 1pm until 2pm. The cost is $15 per child. It is suitable for children aged between five and 12 years.

Also from January 16 is the opportunity to make yummy Edible Medals. Children will create cookie medals to celebrate their racing wins. They will decorate pre-baked cookies and tie on a ribbon to be able to wear them. This one hour workshop will be held on January 16, January 18 and January 20, 2012 from 10.30am until 11.30am and 1pm until 2pm. The cost is $10 and it's recommended for children aged between six and 10 years.

It is essential to book for these workshops (the cost is $10 per child or $15 per child depending on workshop), and numbers are limited. All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. There is a limit of three children per adult.

You can book and pay online via the Ipswich Art Gallery website. For more information on other kids activities at the Ipswich Art Gallery, please see here.

The Children's Gallery in the Ipswich Art Gallery is open from 10am until 5pm daily.
