Bugsy Malone on one level is a bizarre movie to get your head around, so it's set in Chicago and all the characters are played by kids and it's a musical.
However some incredible visuals and some very talent young actors help your brain make the necessary logic leap in order to get into the story.
The story is essentially a gangster film with musicals. It tells of the rivalry between speakeasy owner Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Stuck in the middle trying to make peace and a little money is broke boxing promoter Bugsy Malone.
The rivalry between the two 'business men' eventually gets out of control and lots of shoot outs with tommy guns (filled with cream) or rather splurge guns ensues. Bugsy is hired by Fat Sam to try track down the source of the guns and take Dandy Dan out.
Bugsy in the mean time has fallen for one of the dancers at Fat Sam's club, the sweet and naïve Blousey who wants to go to Hollywood and be a movie star. There is also Fat Sam's girlfriend Tallulah- the chanteuse of the speak easy who throws more than one spanner into the works of Blousey and Bugsy's budding romance.
Needless to say the story has a happy ending. This film looks great and features a stellar cast including Jodie Foster in one of her earliest roles as Tallulah and Scott Baio as Bugsy . There's also Florrie Dugger and John Cassisi and Martin Levi.
