Brown's Mart Theatre is one of place in Darwin where you can catch live music in the courtyard, watch theatre performances or participate in workshops. This simple rectangular stone building with a corrugated galvanised iron hipped gabled roof was built in 1885 as a market. In 1897, this building was damaged by a cyclone and was reconstructed in 1974 as a theatre.

Now, this heritage listed building is a place to support new talented artists to nurture their creativity and providing a place for them to explore their ideas. Brown's Mart Theater is located on 12 Smith Street in the middle of Darwin CBD.

Brown's Mart Theatre's 2017 season, called Shimmer, will present new works by award-winning Northern Territory playwrights and an international collaboration.

The Age of Bones by Sandra Thibodeaux from 29 March until 9 April 2017.
The Age of Bones is an Australian-Indonesian co-production. It's about an Indonesian boy who goes fishing one day and fails to return.
The Age of Bones is mostly set under the ocean with a spectacular underwater court.
The Age of Bones was a fantastic piece with shadow puppets, video and music.
Darwin Drama and Brown's Mart production will present
Swagman's Ghost by Levin Diatschenko from 20 June until 9 July 2017. Swagman's Ghost is about a gang of bushrangers cleverly disguised as a band of travelling musicians. They hypnotise their audiences, then taking their wallets.

The season includes God's Waiting Room from 25 July until 6 August 2017. Mary Anne Butler as the writer of God's Waiting Room will evoke asylum seeker Hamed Mokri's passage to hope and possibility in a tiny boat upon high and stormy seas, with only an Angel of Death as company. This piece of work by Mary Anne Butler is an allegory for a world which has closed its door on humanity and hope.
Shimmer will end with The Daly River Girl. This piece by Tessa Rose will be on the 8 until 26 November 2017. The Daly River Girl is about Tessa Rose's personal story of growing up with various non-indigenous foster families in Perth. In The Daly River Girl, we can follow Tessa's journey from adolescence into womanhood, her first love, the cruelty of domestic violence and her resilience to overcome the many obstacles on her own.
